Hi, open the command prompt with admin rights and run the following command: SxsTrace Trace -logfile:SxsTrace.etl Now run the program which causes the message. Go back to the cmd prompt, hit enter to generate the SxsTrace.etl. Now upload this file to your public SkyDrive folder and post the link here. Hi carrtim1, a. When do you get these error message in event viewer? b. Do you get this error message while you tried to install some application? c. Do you have the Visual Studio applicaiton installed on your computer? You install a product that updates the Mfc80.dll module or the Mfc80u.dll module on the computer from version 8.0.50727.870 to version 8.0.50727.3078. For example, you install Microsoft SQL Server 2008. When you run an application that is built with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, an access violation occurs in the Mfc80.dll module or in the Mfc80u.dll module. And, the application crashes. Note This problem applies to many other applications, including applications that are used on Windows 7. This problem occurs because the two versions are incompatible. Step 1: There is a hotfix available for this. Refer this link and download the hotfix to fix this issue. Hi everyone Thanks for you quick reply. I had installed Office 2010 Professoinal Plus 64bit from my MSDN account. Everything seemed to run ok but they were showing in evant viewer as soon as Windows 7 booted. There were 6 enteries almost straight away in event viewer. I have managed to to get rid of these errors by installing Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistribution. I installed this on because it said it was Windows 7 compatable. I don't know if this was the right thing to do or not but the errors are no longer showing and things seem to be running ok. I can't think of anything I would of installed that required the C++ 2005 modules. Tim

Chad_Hedglin , Thanks for the respond. I made bootable Malwarebytes Antivirus and check my computer. It did not find system viruses. So I just renamed infected files but it did not help. Today I will bring my computer to geek squad to see what they can do.
Hello, I have not updated my findings with this situation until now. If you are experiencing this problem where virtually all programs are not opening and giving the Error ," The application has failed to open because it's side by side configuration is incomplete. Please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." You may be in bad shape. My PC was doing this and all the resolutions that i could find basically said i needed to re load the Microsoft Visual C++. However, Everyone who said to do this re install was not helpful. When i tried to erase and re load the Visual C++ i always got a error 1719 saying that windows installer was not installed correctly or so on... NOW, what i can tell you is that i could only use a certain amount of programs on my PC, Internet explorer would operate and a few little programs such as paint,word,ect.. that came pre loaded on the computer. I spent almost 8 months slowly searching for a resolution to this a
SXSTRACE.EXE Error Window
Dear Community, I am writing to get some help with an error message that keeps coming up. I am unable to use many key programs on my desk-top computer. I will admit that I am no computer wiz because I have attempted some of the fixes from the community and promptly get lost. The desk-top computer that I am using is an older HP (64-bit operating system using Windows 10). Like I said, we cannot use Outlook any more as well as other key programs. The error message looks like this: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more details." While I do not know what many of these terms mean, I would very much like to get this corrected. Please help! Thank you!
We appreciate the additional information that you have provided. We would like to confirm if you have checked the steps from the link posted above? That would show you on how you can get the Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable package to possibly resolve this concern. As for the second method stated in there, you can proceed to this link System file check (SFC) Scan and Repair System Files & DISM to fix things SFC cannot which is created by ZigZag3143 (MS-MVP) . That article would be able to guide you in running the System File Checker (SFC) tool to scan any system file corruptions and possibly fix them as well. If in case the SFC tool wasn't able to fix the corruptions, the DISM tool would be able to make up for that. Keep us posted with the results.
Dear Microsoft Windows 10 support, Thank you so much for sending the recommendation! I used "...DISM / Online / Cleanup - Image / RestoreHealth " several times and it cleared up the sxstrace.exe problems. Outlook and the other programs are now functioning. Thanks so much! gratefully, John
Hello Jomel, It is certainly encouraging to hear from you. You ask some good questions so here are the answers: As far as I can tell, there have been no changes to the computer that I know of- no new programs, apps, or unusual emails with inks that we have opened. I am using Version 1709 of Windows 10 (it also lists OS Build 16299.125). We first noticed the problem about two weeks ago when Outlook (2010) would freeze up occasionally. We would have to exit the program and restart it and it would work for a while, freeze up again and we would close and restart the program. It was at this time that we found that other programs (Norton Utilities, Norton Security, and HP Printer Solution Center) would also not work. Firefox, Chrome, and Edge work fine. Since the problem started I have run many scans from Norton Utilities in an effort to try to find a virus or malware that could have caused it. In the past, Norton's has been very helpful in providing diagnostic scans and the finding solution

I tried repairing c++ and sevral tutoriols on how to fix this. I desprately need a solution. I hope someone can help me.
Hi, This is a known Windows issue, primarily occurring on Windows Vista. It can occur for several reasons. In some cases it occurs because the machine has Microsoft Visual C++ installed, and the Visual C++ libraries have become corrupted. In other cases it indicates that the installation of program did not completely finish. It may also mean that the one of the parts may be corrupted or the game dll file is not located in the location where the installation wizard is trying to look for. NOTE: This may happen if the games are downloaded from any Peer to Peer locations like torrent portals, rapidshare etc.. Try these: Always Microsoft !!!

WINDOWS 10 when I try to open Lenovo Photo master I get the message that it won't open refer to sxstrace.exe
I have windows 10 and have nothing but issues since I bought it with a new laptop a couple of months ago - if it's not one thing it's another. I tried to open Lenovo Photo master and get the message that it won't open because it's side to side configuration...etc. - see command line sxstrace.exe blah blah. I found an answer to this relating to windows 7 and downloaded the 2008 program 64 version - I already had the 86 version. I have the Windows C++ programs for all windows downloaded including 86 and 64 of each version from C++ to 2013. This was because of a previous message problem that was then sorted. Aren't later versions of windows supposed to be easier, simpler? I have to keep going back to my Windows 7 on my old laptop because it works. Windows 10 is rubbish. Any help on this latest problem? I don't want to download any 'fixit programs off the net - I shouldn't need to. I am getting very grumpy.
Hi Veronica, Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you are facing. Let me help you in resolving the issue. Side-by-Side Configuration, Application Event Log, sxstrace.exe Help
Please help. I recently "updated" my Windows 10 on 12/23/17 with their newest update. However, ever since, I can no longer access the majority of my applications (including Adobe, OpenOffice, MediaGo, Steam, etc.). A pop keeps coming up saying: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." I've tried accessing my application event log as well as the sxstrace.exe tool, but both applications disappear faster than they appear. I cannot access either. So, I went to the internet. I have 9 different Microsoft Visual C++ varying from 2008-2015, installed between 11/03/2011-12/23/17. I'm at my wits end. I'm a writer and I can't access my work because I can't use OpenOffice. The only applications that work are my internet applications (thank Heaven) and iTunes (go figure). Please, please help. I don't know what else to do.
You can try this since you may need all packages: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/visual_c_runtime_installer.html But you may have to do a refresh of your operating system if you have corrupted system files that can't be fixed. To do that go to the Settings -> Update and Security -> Recovery -> Reset this PC.

After a system restore I had to do, I attempted to open an application on my desktop. I clicked the application and nothing happened. I then tried to open it by right clicking and selecting open. I then got an error - "Windows cannot find target" . I wasn't sure why this was occurring, because I'm pretty sure System Restore/Startup Repair isn't supposed to delete files. I then tried to go to the application folder, and find the .exe file in hopes that that would open it. That merely gave a fresh, new error - "Error: The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail" . Fascinating. What I'm trying to open is Flight Simulator X. It worked perfectly fine before I did the system restore. Is there anyway I can solve this issue without a complete re-instillation of the game? I've already had to of re-installed this game twice, and from what I've read, the Produ

Latest Supported Visual C++ Downloads http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019667 Method 2: You may also try uninstalling and re-installing Cyberlink PowerDirector 9 to check if that helps: For more information refer the following link: Uninstall or change a program http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Uninstall-or-change-a-program For details about it check the application event log using event viewer. MS Developer Software (Visual Studio etc) expects 64-bit software to go to Programs Files directory and 32-bit software to go to Programs Files (x86) directory among several other conventions. Google intentionally violates these conventions for Chrome. Both 32-bit and 64-bit Chrome land in Programs Files (x86) directory along with other violations. Not 100% sure why Google choose this. But it does keep beginners from successfully installing BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit Chrome regardless of whether developer software is installed. With MS Developer software installed, it throws a fit over attempts to install both or sometimes 64-bit alone. Without Windows 64-bit usually just takes the most recent install. Could well be Google's attempt to get brand new developers to call Google and give Google a chance to sell those people on the "much easier and less quirky" Android software development environment. Of course with just a little experience or guidance its still possible to get Chrome side-by-
Hi there! I had the same issue - had no idea how to solve it. While reading this thread I was playing around with the computer settings and seem to have fixed it! I did the following: >control panel >network and internet >manage browser add ons (under the 'internet options' heading) >general >then I retyped my homepage address - https://www.google.com/ within the box under the 'home page' heading Apply the changes - then chrome opened as normal. When I first went into this section the homepage address was google.com/(random numbers and letters). I didn't want to have to reinstall chrome and lose all my auto logins (lazy) - this kept everything running as normal. Hopefully helpful for someone else!
Hi Tony, This issue is caused by a conflict with some of the files on the application. For us to provide the best resolution possible, we would like to ask the following: Have you made any recent changes on your computer prior to the issue? What troubleshooting steps have you done so far? Have you tried other application or browser? If yes, are you experiencing the same problem? We're looking forward to your reply.
Trying to uninstall results in a "problem with this Windows Installer package" error. Help?
All that told me is i have a problem which i already knew. How about some info on how to solve it?
Uninstall Chrome then reinstall it.

Most of my applications will not open. I continue to get the error message: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."
Hi Greg, There is a special place in Heaven for you if you can resolve my issue! I am so grateful you are willing to help me. Question: There are 2 downloads for x86 and 2 downloads for x64 in your list, total of 4 downloads. My system is x64 so which downloads should I use? I want your advice before I do anything so I am certain that I am following your instructions. I am running Windows 10. Please reply ASAP so I can get started.
Hi Nancy. I'm sorry I was delayed but we have been at the funeral home today planning my father's funeral. You would install the 64 bit downloads on a 64 bit system. If you have either installed now, I'd uninstall them first in Settings > Apps & Features and restart the PC first. Let me know how it goes.
Greg, I replied to you this morning but have not heard back from you. As you can imagine, I am anxious to resolve my issue. Hope you will reply to my former message sent this a.m. before too long. I need your reply before I start to download from your list.
I used the Fix download and it worked!! Now both of the Visual C++ program have been uninstalled from my system. Now, just so I understand what you want me to do next, you want me to download ALL 4 of the listed downloads in your original message to me?? Even though I have a x64, and two of the downloads in your list are for x86? Forgive me for being so unsure of myself, but I need your assurance that I am doing what you want me to do. I need you to tell me to download all 4, one after another, OR tell me which ones I should download. I know I am repeating the same question to you over and over, but please stay with me. So far, you advice has been spot-on!!
Greg, this is my third attempt today to reach you about your suggestions to resolve my issue. I don't want you to think I am compulsive, but I am so anxious to get my system fixed so that all my applications will work. My question is for you to tell me which of the 4 suggested downloads in your list you want me to download? I don't know enough about the policies and restrictions of this help forum, but are you and I able to exchange phone numbers so that we can talk? You mentioned in your original reply to my issue that I should feel free to ask you any questions.....problem is that I am not receiving any reply. It would be so helpful if we could talk by phone. Please reply ASAP.
Hi Nancy - You can reset Windows Installer to see if that helps: Right click task bar to open Task Manager. If necessary show More Details On Details tab look for msiexec.exe, highlight to End Task. Now try install or uninstall again. If this doesn’t help you can try to Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/... This can also be symptomatic of corruption. I would go over the integrity of your install by working through the steps for Windows 10 Performance Troubleshooting: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki... Otherwise you can try installing the 64 bit VC++, and if that doesn't help I'd also install the 32 bit (x86) ones which sometimes are required too.
Hi Nancy. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you. The machine is missing the correct C++ Runtime components for your type of system. (x86 or x64). I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
I haven't heard from you since my reply late this morning. I know you must be busy and I don't want to be guilty of being demanding. Please understand that. I think I am ready to download from your list of 4 C++....in your original email to me. I just don't know if you want me to download all four, or just one or two, etc. My system is x64. Hanging by my fingernails!! Thanks for everything you are doing for me.

First and foremost, my condolences upon the loss of your father. I apologize for my compulsive replies yesterday! I successfully uninstalled a C++ 64 bit program, but there is another one, Visual C++2010 x86 redistributable 10.0.40219, which will not allow me to uninstall. When I attempt to uninstall it, it reads "Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance". Shall I just leave it there and start downloading the sites you suggested? BTW, your list consists of 4 downloads, two for x64 and two for x86. Do you want me to download BOTH of the x64 sites in your list, one after the other? Another thought....why do I have a C++ x86 in my program list at all? My system is x64. Could that be why it won't allow me to uninstall that one??

You can get to this screen by pressing the windows button on your keyboard, then type "system". Your answer should be here. Notice how the System Type shows "x64-based processor" in the above image. That being the case, you would select vcredist_x64.exe. The same logic applies if it reads "x86-based" or "arm-based".

Side by side configuration error
Received "side by side configuration error" when trying to open Word 2007 document. Error also states "See application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail".
My experience is as follows - Win 7 Home Premium was running fine; power cut whilst running led to only being able to run Internet Explorer as everything else threw up the 'side-by-side configuration' message. Unable to install or delete anything meaningful including C++ or .net framework stuff. After lots of hunting for the myriad of solutions, none of which worked, not even in safe mode, I resorted to reinstalling Windows 7. BUT that didn't lose everything. Rather than having to do a full install from scratch, all I did was choose the 'upgrade' option from the Windows Install disc. A few restarts later and keying in the product key it came up with a message stating that it had found .net errors which it was fixing, then at the end of the process all was good - all the old applications there and now working, no data lost, etc... So - worth knowing for others, I hope...

It included on uninstalling and reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable Packages from 2005 onwards. But to my findings, can't even install the said program without the same dialog box appearing every time. And when trying to remove the program, Error 1719 keeps appearing. My computer seems to be healthy as far as I know until that issue happened. I just noticed it when some of the icons on my taskbar disappeared out of the blue, very weird I said. Was able to chat with a live agent from customer support. After screen remote and checking, the agent suggested on doing system restore. After loading, i

Have you attempted a repair upgrade? It just might help: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki... Hi Sir! Appreciate you response. I waited for the next cumulative update of windows but the system wasn't able to install it showing error on the process. As I expected, it wouldn't push through with the installation. I tried your suggestion which was the media creation tool/repair upgrade. It was actually the same thing that the agents that I was able to talk to attempted to do. After double clicking the download, the same dialog box keeps appearing. Kind of stuck in a loop of some sort. I would be really grateful of any help that you or anyone could suggest or provide. Please. Thank you in advance.

Hello Jordache, Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community. The machine is missing the correct C++ runtime components for your type of system. To do this, Right click on Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin). 2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. I am unable to use Microsoft Edge and/or Norton Security Suite. The last major update did not complete on my device. Somewhere towards the end of the update process my device begin to scream in very very high PITCH sound that was so unbearable to the ears I had to turn the computer off because the scream hurt so much. I continue to get error messages reporting side by side configuration when trying to access apps. Please advise.
Hi Shonnell, The issue could be due to incompatibility or conflict with the current programs running on your device. To isolate the issue, please provide the following information: Which version and build of Windows is running on your device? Is it possible to send a screenshot or at least provide the error message? Regards.
If you have Microsoft Edge, you must have Windows 10, so I will move your question to the proper forum. Unless your computer is having a slightly early Halloween, the only thing I can think of that would produce a very loud high pitched "scream" is a failing bearing on a fan (or much less likely, on a hard drive). Is the reason that the update didn't complete is because you shut the computer down? Did the screaming resume when you started the computer again? Is the error message you received: Error: The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail If so, you may be able to fix the error by installing the 2008 and 2010 versions of the Visual C++ Redistributable Package as explained here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/error-the-application-has-failed-to-start-because/df019c0d-746e-42d0-ad68-465e18e3f3ef Or you might h

Hi Microsoft team, My notebook is not able to execute some of the applications after Windows update. The OS is Windows 7 64bit SP1. After I upgraded Windows by AVAST suggestion (an Anti-virus program), it seems my OS is crashed or missed some files. It cannot open some software such as my office, word, ppt, and even Skype. It is really weird and the system show following message whenever I execute the program. "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for detail" I have searched some information and they asked me to install something below: https://www.microsoft.com/zh-tw/download/details.aspx?id=26368 I've tried 2005, 2008 and 2010, but none of them work. Then I checked my event viewer, and the error source is "SideBySide", the code is "33". sxstrace.exe tool Side-by-side message comes up after updates Windows 8 or 8.1
When I installed automatic updates on May 27, 2015 nothing works now. What I mean is when I try to open internet Explorer it just flashes like it opens and closes just as fast (no error window). Then when I try to open like Google Chrome, media player, eBay Turbo Lister (it seams like anything that tries to connect to internet) comes up with error Side-By-Side configuration is incorrect . When I try to open my Norton's anti virus it will not open. Now other programs such as Paint, Notepad, WordPad all seam to work just fine. Everything was working just fine up to the point when the updates were installed. It showed 17 important updates so I clicked on install now and then when updates were installed I restarted like I was to do. I checked out other ones with this problem but don't know for sure how to make sxstrace.exe tool work exactly. Another strange thing after these updates it came up that windows defender not working with anti virus (something like that don't remember exactly her
Hi Kevin, Welcome to Microsoft Community. I understand that you have an issue with Windows after performing the Windows Updates. We apologize for the unhandiness caused to you and thank you for providing us the detailed information. In this situation I would suggest you to perform a System Restore to a point where the computer was working fine (i.e., before May 27, 2015). To do so refer the section Restore your PC to an earlier point in time from the below help article How to refresh, reset, or restore your PC http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc Important: The System Restore restores the computer back to an earlier point in time, called a restore point. System Restore doesn’t change your personal files, but it might remove recently installed apps and drivers and also reset the recently changed settings on the computer. Keep us posted on the issue to assist you better.
I did that before you posted it and it worked now next question should I install all the updates all at once or 1 at a time to figure out which one caused problem to start with? and what order should I install them or does it matter? I really do think I will buy my next computer as a MAC just so I have something to compare to.

This comes from the same write-up: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=200B2FD9-AE1A-4A14-984D-389C36F85647&displaylang=en and it is listed as Windows 7. After installation you should run Windows Update and see if there are any updates to install.
Unfortunately, that did not work, is it wise to try to install the other suggested downloads from that page?
SideBySide errors are typically caused by the current Microsoft Visual C++ version not being backward compatible with the application that failed. The Event ID 33 error message is typically: Activation context generation failed for “program name”..Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis. There are other similar SideBySide errors with the same problem of backward compatibility. If the software works OK then you don't have to fix it but if it does not or you want to get rid of this error here are two Fixes: 1) Reinstall or Repair (preferred if an option) the application. Often the installation package will have the version of Microsoft Visual C++ that it uses and will install it. 2) Try to figure out what Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package version (available versions are: 2003, 2005, 2008, & 2010) the application needs (most likely the one that came out prior to the date that the application software was created; check the dates of the files in the package). . I got the error message: Error: The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail However I found myself a simpler solution than those proffered as Answers in previous discussions. In my case it was Chrome Canary Browser that was giving the Error. I simply reinstalled it. If that is thinking 'outside of the box', then I'm sorry. To me it seems obvious. Hope this helps anyone meandering through pages and pages of useless information that adorns this Microsoft quagmire that calls itself 'Answers'.
Error: "The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail"
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x 64 bit on my desk top computer and am receiving the above error message whenever I attempt to open any of my applications - this includes I.E.,Mozilla,Chrome etc so I have no access to the internet or Windows Updates/Downloads. I believe the problem came about following a Memory Test on my RAM modules. Via another computer, I have managed to download the two Visual C++ run time component files (suggested by Marilyn on 15 August 2011) and have copied them to my faulty computer BUT how do I now install them because when attempting to execute them I am prevented from doing so by the underlying problem of "....the side by side configuration is incorrect............." Would I be able to install via a 'Command Prompt' or am I destined in having to do a complete re-install of my Operating System?
Hi Tony, This issue may occur due to corrupted system files. I would suggest you to run SFC (System File Checker) Scan and then try to install the Microsoft Visual C++ packages which you have downloaded on the other computer. Check if it helps. SFC scan will scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them. Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 Additionally you may check in event viewer for related logs: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-information-appears-in-event-logs-Event-Viewer Hope this information helps. Hi Geethu B, Still no joy I'm afraid. I have tried both the Safe Mode option and Clean Boot option but neither alleviates the problem and I am still unable to open any application. Regards Tony
Hi Tony, Thank you for the reply. I appreciate your efforts to resolve the issue. I would suggest you to perform System Restore to an earlier point when the issue was not started. Check if it helps. Hi Tony, Thank you for the reply. I would suggest you to create a new user account and check if you are facing the same issue. Hi Tony, Thank you for the reply. Let's check whether same issue occurs in Safe Mode or not. Set the computer in Clean Boot if the issue does not occur in Safe Mode. Step 1: To start the computer in Safe Mode follows the steps in the link. Start your computer in safe mode: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode Step 2: Let's set the computer in clean boot if the issue do not occur in Safe Mode. Hi Tony, I would suggest you to perform an in-place upgrade. To perform an in-place upgrade you need to have the Windows 7 installation disc. How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 Note : Be sure to back up any data you want to keep before you begin as there might be a potential for data loss.
Hi Rohit, Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately like a lot of 'Microsoft Solutions' it is assumed that one's computer is functioning properly which it clearly is not (Prime example is when it is suggested you go 'on-line' for a solution, when one of your problems is that you do not have an internet connection)and cannot go on-line) I attempted the 'in-place upgrade' but more or less immediately was informed that I did not have enough free disk space to carry out the operation. I then attempted to free up space by deleting data and programmes but presumably because of the underlying error of the 'side by side configuration' the system would not allow me to, even when I tried via an 'elevated command prompt'. As a result , I have finally decided to 'bite the bullet' so to speak and have zapped ,re-formatted my hard disk and re-installed Windows 7 and everything appears now to be back to normal. The only problem I now have is getting Windows Update to install the 150 or so 'updates
Hi Geethu B, Your efforts are also appreciated. I have already tried a System Restore just after the problem manifested itself but without result. Unfortunately the last restore point didn't go back far enough. Regards Tony Codd
Hi again Geethu B, I have tried both your suggestions (1) Creating a New User Account/Profile and (2) Fix Corrupted User Profile but unfortunately neither worked or made any difference whatsoever. Further suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Tony Codd
Good morning Geethu B, Thank you very much for your resonse and suggestions contained therein. I ran the sfc scan but unfortunately it did not appear to find any files that were corrupt or needing repair. As a double check, so to speak, I then ran the "More troubleshoot steps for advanced users to determine which files could not be repaired by the SFC tool" but again there did not appear to be any files that were found needing repair. I did not carry out the second option in the advanced users section of "If the SFC tool cannot repair a file" as there was no indication in the previous two steps, that I had carried out, to suggest that it had found any files that it could not repair. Out of curiosity (after conducting the two steps shown above) I did try and execute the two downloaded Visual C++ files via an 'elevated command prompt' again, but received the same error message of "......failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect........................." I also
I am getting error when running a software billspy on my 64 bit OS. the error is "the application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect"

I suspect you have to re-install both billspy and the C++ it uses. Your best bet is to contact the developer.

I'm trying to launch QQ Messenger but I keep on getting this error message. I have installed Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013 on my Asus x455L Windows 10. I have restarted my computer after the installation but the same error message. Please help.
I got it fix. Sorry my bad. I downloaded the QQ Messenger not on the official site.
Maybe this will help: http://kf.qq.com/eng/index.html There is an Email Address there which is: Contact us E-mail:qqimail@tencent.com
Hi Jennifer, it depends on which version(s) of the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages that you installed . .. As far as I know QQ requires this version, install that and then restart your PC: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/detail...
Try installing the latest version of the Visual C++ Redistributable 2015, both 32 and 64 bit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/detail... If that does not work, try installing from within the built in Administrator account: Open Start Type: cmd Right click CMD Click Run as administrator At the command prompt, type: net user administrator/active:yes Hit Enter Close command prompt, restart, then try signing into the Administrator account. Try running the file again.
Hi Jennifer, I am glad this issue is resolved . ..

Hi Chris, Those errors were / are found in the Events Viewer for Windows Applications Logs. I am looking to reinstall Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0. Where can I download it from to reinstall?
How do I find the application event log or the command line sxstrace.exe tool?
I am told that the side by side configuration is incorrect. I am told to see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool. For someone who has not had to do this before. Where do I access these applications or tools?
Hi, 1. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to the issue? 2. Do you get this as an error message when you try to access an application? If yes, which application? Please see the link mentioned below for information about how to use event viewer to check for error message or information. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-information-appears-in-event-logs-Event-Viewer You usually get this error when there is a problem with Visual C++ redistributable package. Please, does anyone know about this tool ... sxstrace.exe?
I am getting to know what I can (and can't) do in WIndows 7 Pro 64 Bit. I am begining to really like it a lot. Even though I dual booting with XP Pro, I can see the day I will go exclusively to 7. I'll have to try out XP Mode first for awhile though. My CPU has all the right stuff. MMmmSweeet~! I know that this has to do with Side By Side (which I know nothing about) and it is used to trace something in programs. I first saw this tool in the Event Viewer whilst looking to see what errors and stuff is slowing down the computer (and another boot issues). What I'd like to find out, besides what Command Prompt /? help says; Is what this tool is used for? Are there any resources available? (In fact, I would like to get to know what I can do at the prompt, I used to be doing DOS, back in the day.) What is in the trace that would be useful to me? Event view is telling me to use it to trace something. Thanks! ░░▒▒▓▓█│Ben Curtis│█▓▓▒▒░░ My System build: http://valid.canardpc.com/cache/
My CPU has all the right stuff. MMmmSweeet~! A minor comment... do note that the latest version of XP Mode doesn't require that the processor support hardware-assisted virtualization. Windows XP Mode now accessible to more PCs on the Windows Team Blog:
Look at this blog article: http://www.moneypa.com/post/Diagnosing-SideBySide-failures-(sxstraceexe-usage).aspx . It's not the newest source but gives you an idea how and for what the tool is used. "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” (Thomas J. Watson, Sr.)
That link is bad (404 page missing). Where else can we find an explanation for this tool?
Oops, posted in wrong question; but, people probably want to fix this too if they're troubleshooting... you know, that pesky Event link at the bottom of events! Yeah, that one! Use this as a temporary workaround, just copy and past into a text file and save with extension '.reg' not '.txt' no quotes, and double click to have it modify the registry, or modify the registry yourself with regedit. As one can see it points to a registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Event Viewer and modifies the MicrosoftRedirectionURL key to https://www.howtogeek.com/eventid Someone discovered this, and posted it to answers today; I marked it as an answer, though microsoft doing it would be better. It uses a page that howtogeek made to at least pull up information on the internet, something I used to do manually. 2) Try to figure out what Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package version (available versions are: 2003, 2005, 2008, & 2010) the application needs (most likely the one that came out prior to the date that the application software was created; check the dates of the files in the package). . These are

"Error: The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail"
I previously had QQ (an international chat program) installed on laptop. Then my harddrive crashed. Now when I try to reinstall it on my new harddrive I receive the following message: "Error: The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail" - how can I fix this problem? I have Windows 7.
Hi, Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community to post your question. It appears that you are unable to install QQ international application, you get an error: "The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail". We are here to help you and guide you in the right direction. This issue could be caused when the computer is missing the correct C++ run time components for your type of system. (x86 or x64). Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try to resolve this problem. Method 1: Let's install Microsoft Visual C++ package for your computer. Note: If you are running 32-bit operating system, download and install 32-bit edition(X86). If you are running 64-bit operating system, download and install 64-bit edition(X64). I see the "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." error with many kinds of programs now (Opera, Skype). I tried the steps recommended in this tech note. Unfortunately when I try to uninstall or install anything related to Visual C++ I get the same "side-by-side configuration" error. I also tried Method 2 described above and it claimed to have fixed the problems with uninstalling. No joy. I've tried to run sfc /scannow and also tried many other fixes recommended on the Microsoft KB, but nothing has helped. This problem started after the most recent Windows updates were downloaded. I also see numerous instances of this error message under Update Settings: 2017-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4034674) Failed to install on 11-Aug-17 Is there anything else that I can try or do I need to reinstall Windows
I have encountered the exact same problem after reinstalling Windows 7 to remove a virus. I have tried your troubleshooting methods, but they are not working. What do suggest? Thank you.

You might be interested in this. Your solution fixed the same problem, but there are serious questions I have, and I wonder if there might be some other issue not fixed. First of all, I run sfc and dism.exe regularly (Win8.1). There are--and were, supposedly--no corrupt files on the system, even though turning Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 off and on fixed the problem. I was trying to install Applian Replay's Video Padlock 1.20 on the system. On the first attempted installation, the side-by-side error occurred. The first thing I did was to take ownership of the installer, then run it as administrator. The next run of the installer did not work either--but the error was different. Windows could not access the "specified...path, or file." Well, duh, I had full permission; I checked after running TakeOwn. I put the installer on different drives, I renamed it, and got the same error. I downloaded the installer again, and even checked my archive for my original version, but all the installer files turned out to be identical. Then I ran the compatibility assistant, and I tried installing it in compatibility mode for Win8 (which is what the assistant suggested), then, when that didn't work, I tried it in compatibility mode for Win7, then one of the Vistas and one of the XPs (in each case, for all users.) The same thing happened.
This type of error could be caused if runtime components of Visual C++ libraries are missing or because of third-party software. Follow the methods listed below: Method 1: If the issue is caused due to missing Visual C++ libraries, you may download and install the Runtime components of Visual C++ libraries from the link below: This error may occur when the Microsoft .NET Framework installation on the computer is damaged or is missing. Try the below step to reinstall and repair the Microsoft .NET Framework installation on the computer and later check if you can install the software. a) Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click "Turn Windows features on or off." If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. b) Locate Microsoft .NET framework 3.5.1, uncheck the box, click OK and restart the computer. c) After the restart again open "Turn Windows features on or off" and place a check mark nex
I need to use sxstrace.exe
how do I Access it?
Hi Brian, We need more information regarding your concern with accessing sxstrace.exe. What are you trying to do? Why do you want to access the command-line tool that you've mentioned? Are you experiencing any issues with your computer? If yes, what is the exact issue that you are experiencing? We look forward to your response.
This is a very unsatisfactory reply - I asked a question - you asked me a question back! It reminds me of the first years of commercial computing when the magic computer people sat behind machine room doors and wouldn't tell anyone about what they did. I spent forty years of my working life with computer firms taking the mystique out of computing. I have a little sympathy with your job. In the old days Microsoft operating systems manuals were very good. Now someone in Microsoft decided not to produce a manual. Finding things out when you are retired is a nightmare. You can follow things round and round on your various websites for ages - they need a fundamental rethink with a good editor in charge. I have answered my question yesterday and accessed sxstrace.exe Cheers Brian

It appears when I try to launch Google Chrome or any Microsoft Office product. The problem also prevents me from downloading any program from the internet, as I tried to download an uninstaller but got an error message. I've had a look online and this error is often caused by problems in the C++ files? So I went into Programs and Files in the Control Panel and tried to 'Repair' or 'Uninstall' some of these programs/files, but I get an error message for that too. I have tried going to the Command Prompt and trying to run an sfc scan, but it tells me another program is currently running a scan. I can't find anything else running a scan. I've tried restarting the computer and repeating steps. I've tri

Check THIS link - If these C++ installs don't help you may need another version. I have 16 different C++ Redistributable's on my machine, starting with six from '05. Don't know if they're all necessary. Various software has installed them. If you have a 64bit OS you need both X86 and 64bit versions. .

Hey guys, I had the same error also when I tried to run one of my own program. I typed in "event log" in the Windows Help search and opened the event viewer from there. In the "Summary of Administrative Events." Lo and be hold there the newest error was "side by side". THe message is as follows: "Activation context generation failed for "C:\apache\webapps\SNP\jsp\SNP_single.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. This makes sense since I just uninstalled my visual studio. Guess I have to reinstall it.... You probably are missing some runtime file too, albeit different ones. So maybe going to event log and google the assembly stuff you see may help. Best, Jian
Some more info I wanted to share... I went back through the logs and traced it as far back, looking to try to pinpoint when I started getting errors. I noticed that at one point, the PC had reported 'unexpected shutdown' several times over. I also noticed an error about a dll-file (I'm sorry, I'm writing this from memory... it was something like dllXXX. exe I believe). There were some critical errors listed, and ultimately I found an early error which suggests a hardware failure. But now I've run some diagnostics on the hard drive and everything comes back fine! could it be the hard drive had some failure, messed up the file structure, is ok now, but that's why I'm getting side-by-side errors? All I know to do at this point is start over and re-install Win 7. Its rather disappointing. I couldn't do a restore because the system in its current state doesn't show any restore points! (I am really good at keeping restore points... this probably burned me more than anything else! Where d

I've experienced the exact same problem today. It begins upon boot-up, several programs won't start up because of the same error (AVG, Logitech mouse software, etc). Many programs I try to open, such a Firefox or my movie database app, Collectorz... DVD shrink, Total Media 3, everything gives me the same error as above. I found my way to the event logs but I really have no idea to look for. I've tried several reboots (haven't yet attempted a restore, trying to avoid it), same results every time. I tried to look through the event logs for each reboot to see where it begins... but it seems like the main problem is cascading into several other problems. I'm getting Errors, not warnings. I see the side-by-side errors listed, but in addition to DHCP errors and what not. Everything was perfectly fine until today. I have a task that reboots the PC every morning at 8am, so I can only assume my first instance of this started after today's reboot. But last night, was working perfectly

Missing the file sxstrace.exe, not sure how to fix
Hi there, I've made a small program with microsofts Visual Basic .net 2008. I then published the program, which gave me a setup file. I ran the setup and installed my program. It worked like it should. I then noticed that I had given my program the wrong name, so I removed the program from my computer, and changed the name in Visual Basic. Then I published it again, and ran the new setup. I installed the program, and got an error message saying the application couldn't start and that I should contact the maker of the application.. which is me :p When I click on 'details' I get the following message. But as you might see, its in Dutch.. (and I've removed the path name because of some private names which are in it) http://pastebin.com/UqAHxHin I get a different error when I try to run the .exe in the Bin - Debug folder of the Visual Basic program I made. That error says something about side-byside configuration not working. I then tried it some more times, removing it and publishing agai

Hi Wayne, This issue might occur due to Windows updates or drivers not compatible. Method 1: I would suggest you to install all the available Windows updates and check if the issue persists. Method 2: I would suggest you to disable User account control settings and see if that helps. Keep us updated on the status of the issue.
The situation went from bad to worse with my Surface Pro losing networking ability (wireless) and then not even finishing the boot sequence. After much research and trying many fixes (I did nto have a backup image - I do now!) I used the 'volume-up' during boot to get to the UEFI (BIOS) menu , let it sit for over 90 minutes and then Exit Setup and select No to exit without saving configuration changes to get Surface Pro to take me into diagnostics where I was able to restore the system to a time just before the software was installed for the USB modem. (Found that solution for a different problem on the internet.) Now the Surface Pro is back to working properly and my investigations show that the particular modem I have is not supported by Windows 8 and is in fact discontinued. I then proceeded to look for portable modems that would support both Windows 8 for my Surface Pro and Windows 7 for my notebook and it appears that the best option might be to buy a pocket wifi 'hotspot'. Greetings WayneKarlen, Are you still unable to get your USB modem to work on your Surface Pro?
WINDOWS 7 error The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.
"WINDOWS 7 error The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." This cames almost for every application that I try to open. I have read all kinds of problem solving things, but I can't even install anything because this keeps coming to screen. I think it's like that because my computer shut down when I was doing system restore, because it didn't start. I don't know what to do.

Hi, Side by Side errors can be diagnosed with tool named 'SxSTrace.exe’ it uses ETW (Event Tracing for Windows) model to trace the side-by-side events. It is shipped in Windows 7 and can be found at Windows System32 directory. When required to diagnose side-by-side errors, start the SxSTracing using the below command: SxsTrace Trace -logfile:SxsTrace.etl Then run your application that is causing the problem (reproduce the problem). When done, press Enter to stop the tracing and use the below command to generated a text formatted file of the output. sxstrace Parse -logfile:SxSTrace.etl -outfile:SxSTrace.txt Going through the generated text file should give details of each of the loaded modules and the bindings.
