Right click on Start > Search. Type rundll32.exe in the field for files to be searched for. Choose to search your primary drive (usually C). Enable Search Hidden Files and Folder from Advanced Features. Click on Search button to begin the search. In the list of results, locate the rundll32 file associated with C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386. Right click on rundll32 to the left of the aformentioned directory and choose "Open folder location". The rundll32.exe file should be hightlighted when the folder opens. Right click on the file and choose copy. Next, in the search results list, right click on rundll32 that corresponds to C\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe and choose "Open folder location". Again the file should be highlighted. Right click on the file and choose delete. Right click again in a free space within the folder and choose paste. C:\Windows\rundll32.exe should not exist - rundll32.exe should be in c:\windows\system32. If you are getting the message when the computer boots, use e.g. Autoruns to locate and disable the autostart entry for the item referencing c:\windows\rundll32.exe. Consider scanning your computer for malware with e.g. MalwareBytes AntiMalware.

i have lost my windows xp cd and i need to reinstall rundll32.exe. what can i do?
You probably do not need to reinstall rundll32.exe. However, since you didn't give any indication of why you think you need to do this I can't give you specific help. Are you getting an error message at Startup? Or can't you run any programs because you get an error involving this file? If the latter: 1. Run Doug Knox's .exe fix from here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm 2. Then thoroughly scan your computer for malware because it is infected. Do not skip the preparatory steps. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html# Removing_Malware If you need more help, post back with the results of those two troubleshooting steps and more details about your computer and any error messages. Using Windows XP Home, when I try to open any Control Panels I get a black window open momentarly, it is only open for a second or less. It has taken me numerous attempts to get the window title: C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe there is something in the body of the window but it closes too quickly to read. Can anyone help, I have had a virus in the last couple of months which I managed to repair. Thanks Brian.
Rundll32 is simply a program that runs a .dll file that is fed to it. You don't have much to go on. Try examining the System and Application Event Logs and see if any errors are recorded there: Start -> Run -> "eventvwr.msc" HTH, JW

My computer suffers from the old 'cannot find rundll32.exe' problem. The most common solution I'm getting is "full system restore". So I get my windows XP installation disk, boot it up and the menu appears. However, when I click on the top option, to install XP, nothing happens. The result is the same with most of the buttons except 'browse files on this CD'. How can I work around this problem?
Hi! I tried this, and it worked....mostly. My 'Control Panel' functions still come up with an error message. Let me translate the solution of Full System Restore for you: "I have no idea what is going on with your computer or how to fix it, so try this and maybe it will work." The c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe file is one of 3498 Windows Protected Files. so it is unlikely to be missing. That means that if your Windows File Protection is working, it is almost impossible for that file (or any of the 3497 others) to really be missing. The file is more likely to be infected or has been replaced by some version of a file with the same name from malicious software. You could just replace rundll32.exe it with one of the many other good copies already on your HDD and that may relieve your symptom, but not fix the problem - your computer would still be infected. I would not recommend trying to work around the problem, I would recommend fixing the problem (not fix the symptom of the problem). Is your system functional enough to get on the Internet or not? If yes, do this: Perform some scans for m

When you said you were seeing the option to browse the files on the cd I immediately knew you were not booting from the disc. This option does not appear when you boot from the disc. It only displays when you insert the disc after windows is loaded. When booting from the disc, place the disc in the disc drive then restart the computer. A screen should then appear instructing you to press any key to boot from a cd. At that point, press any key. Follow the prompts from there. If you are not receiving the screen to press any key then it is likely the boot sequence in system bios is not set properly. It should be set to boot from the cd rom first and the hdd second. However, rundll32 errors do not occur for no reason. It is my experience the most common cause is an infection. I recommend you ask this question on the free computer support forum below where you will be guided through a series of procedures to determine if in fact you are infected. Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - Run and type msconfig Then go to the Startup tab. Untick things you don't need. Use the command line column to find info on the file, if it's not showing use View menu - Select Columns. Use the containing folder name and also find the file and right click - Properties - Details tab to see what it is.

Windows Security blocking rundll32.exe
I have been running Windows 7 for sometime, however recently when I have been starting my computer Windows Security has been preventing some programs from opening displaying the message "These files can't be opened - Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened." However the primary file thats being blocked is the rundll32.exe located in the primary windows folder, what could be causing this and how do I fix it? Also the User Account Control board wont let me alter the settings as I've tried to look for solutions to this already. Thanks in advance
Hello TimMcVey, 1. Does this happen when you try to open the files on the Internet Explorer? 2. Did you make any changes to the security setting on the computer before having this issue? 3. What is the security software installed on your computer? If you have this issue with Internet Explorer, I suggest that you reset the Internet Explorer settings and check if you have the same issue. Reset Internet Explorer settings. To use the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature from Control Panel, follow these steps: a. Exit all programs, including Internet Explorer (if it is running). b. Click Start, type the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER: inetcpl.cpl The Internet Options dialog box appears. c. Click the Advanced tab. d. Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again. e. When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box. f. Start Internet Explorer again. Disclaim
Hello, Tim Having multiple anti-virus programs installed will usually cause a conflict which can cause problems. As such, I would first recommend choosing what AV software you want installed, then uninstall the other. After uninstalling the second AV software, check if the problem persists or not. What virus did you have before? Try resetting IE as suggested by Irfan.
I don't use internet explorer, and when I tried to reset the settings the same box as before has popped up blocking the Windows Host Process (rundll32.exe). As far as I know I haven't changed any settings and the UAC isn't letting me do anything, even some of the administrator options are being blocked. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 and Microsoft Security Essentials installed for my security. I did have some viruses that were messing with Internet Explorer could that be the cause?
hi Tim, I'm also having this problem now... it started with my widgets not working And then, i can't even change my system's timing and date which makes it date back to 2009 (Lenovo laptop resets timing when laptop battery drains) and I have certificate expiring problems... Have you had your problem solve? I wouldn't want to go through the process of re-imaging my laptop. Troublesome :(

rundll32.exe delays shutdown
Windows XP Pro-everytime I shutdown I get the message that rundll32.exe is shutting down.
Check out Sysinternals' Autoruns , and try to find instances of rundll32.exe. Uncheck the offending one. If you can't identify it, consider posting the rundll32.exe entries you find, and maybe someone can provide some guidance on which would be appropriate entries to disable.
rundll32.exe Errors
Vista HP 32bit. Errors pertaining to Windows Host Process and rundll32 closing, a program causing Windows Explorer to close... automatic searches for solution (not found)... even after acknowledging error messages, error pops up again, and again, and again ad infinitum. Having perused many Help postings (Microsoft and Google searches) have tried the following: As Administrator, have run sfc under Safe Mode - Command Prompt (some files were not repaired but the Log is denied me); I use regular antimalware/antivirus apps; have tried to replace rundll32 from Safe Mode cmd (access denied); have uninstalled (albeit in slow motion) all recent software installs and some drivers... the error pops up so I can hardly run ANY app. The computer was working well one day and acting up the next during routine use. System restore unavailable for longer back than time of error (not sure how THAT happened); Vista repair from DVD not helpful. System will run OK in Safe Mode.
I use a single Internet Suite (Kaspersky) but several standalone malware scanners, run regularly but not always loaded on startup. I tried a Vista repair using the install DVD to no avail. As the sole user of this computer, I am logged in as Administrator (even in the cmd window title bar this is indicated) so I don't know why I can't view the logfile after running sfc. I will try your suggestions regarding "how to get to the log", then try the other suggestions. I have to work in Safe Mode, though, in order to get anything done - would this affect Administrator privileges? I thought maybe if I copied the c: partition to an unallocated part of a second hard drive, replaced the "corrupt" rundll32 with a good copy, set the new c: partition as boot partition with the original hard drive disconnected, and boot from it. I can easily recover data from the first HD later (provided this method works...)
You can't do a system repair/upgrade from Safe Mode - you have to be in Normal Mode. Safe mode affects many things you can do on the PC - not from priviledges but because certain programs and services are not available. Rahter than doing what you suggested (which would just be moving the problem to another drive), I'd do a clean install of Vista onto the second HDD http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918884 . Then set it up as a dual boot scenario: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Set-up-a-dual-boot-system-from-Windows-Vista-Inside-Out . Boot to the new drive and then copy over your data from the old drive. Then remove the old drive, put the new drive in it's place, and reboot. That should change it to C: drive (if it doesn't, you can do so in Start / Control Panel / Administrative tools/ Computer management / Disk Management and right clicking on the partition with your OS). This should also break the dual boot scenario, but if it doesn't use the procedures to set i
Thanks for your replies. I think the clean install is the way I'll go... too bad though - the computer was set up so nicely. I really can't think why the rundll32 got messed up... any ideas for future reference? David
I have no idea. It probably just got corrupted (that can happen to any file but it happened to one that's particularly important). All you can do to prevent that sort of thing is simple maintenance. Here are some suggestions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Optimize-Windows-Vista-for-better-performance . Good luck to you! Lorien - One - MCSE/MCSA/Network+/A+
You say you use "regular AV apps" - plural. Do you have more than one AV program installed and running at the same time? If so, uninstall all but ONE. You can only have ONE AV application installed and running at the same time or you cause conflicts, freezes, and all sorts of problems). That alone could be the cause of your problem (though I doubt it). You've already tried all the standard first steps to troubleshooting this problem. Do you have a genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk (or can you borrow one from ANYONE)? That would be the quickest solution to your problem - a system repair/upgrade. But to do that we need the disk. I don't understnd why you can't open the SFC log. Are you getting a permissions error even logged in as an administrator? That might tell us a lot about what's wrong. Here's an article on how to interpret that log and how to get to the log (if you can get to it): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228 . It shouldn't be guarded by permissions, espe

Hi, If you need to check for malware here are my recommendations - these will allow you to do a thorough check and removal without ending up with a load of spyware programs running resident which can cause as many issues as the malware and maybe harder to detect as the cause. Hope this helps. Rob Brown - MS MVP - Windows Desktop Experience : Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right.
Hi, Be sure to check with the System Maker's Support (motherboard maker for custom systems), their on-line documentation and drivers, and their forums (if any) for known issues. Maybe these will help. (If you think there maybe malware see the next message.) References to Vista also apply to Windows 7. Hope this helps. Your computer is still severely infected. I would say that it is a virus trying to reboot. Often, some viruses (usually the more well made) will have .dll files that help that virus control your computer, as these viruses are often more intricate than other low level types. And, as a fun fact just for you, these virus .dll's usually have funky names that don't apply to anything. I could be wrong, but I just searched for "makatizi.dll" on my computer with no hits. If a virus scan won't work in eradicating the little bugger, you have to erase your hard drive and start over. If you want to do this, remember to have your Windows XP disk handy, along with any other disks you need for your favorite programs. Good luck!

Hi Edward, It could be that an application is blocking you from changing some settings in Windows. As a first troubleshooting step, we suggest that you boot in to Safe Mode and attempt to change some settings in Windows from there. Booting in Safe Mode would start Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. If you are able to change some settings in Safe Mode , it would mean that the default settings of Windows are not causing the issue. This way we would know if the problem is caused by a third-party application or by Windows itself. You may start your PC in Safe Mode in Windows 10 by following the steps on this link . We look forward to an update from you.

Hi Conrad, Rundll32.exe is a program used to run program code in DLL files which is part of Windows components. There are viruses that uses this name also that's why it's commonly mistaken as a real virus. There are also times that the file gets replaced with a malware infected one. I suggest that you use the System File Checker tool to scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files. The sfc / scannow command (System File Check) scans the integrity of all protected operating system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, changed or damaged versions with the correct versions possible. You may refer to this link for more information. I will wait for your response. Regards.
RUNDLL32.exe Error
Hi everyone, Need help here....everytime I open a program...a box always pops up with message; " C:\PROGRA-\IMESH-1\MediaBar\Datamngr\datamngr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. " The program will only open once I clicked the X or OK button. It happens on every program that I open. How can I fix this? Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Aisa, Thank you for contacting Microsoft community and we will be glad to assist you with your concern. This issue could be due to missing files or any third party application is causing the issue. It would be great if you could answers these questions in order to assist you further. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue? Any data files that are infected may be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss. If you need any other information about Windows, feel free to post your questions and we will be glad to help.
rundll32.exe - Application Error
Toshiba Satellite Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium has been giving Blue Screen Errors for the past month or so when turned on after left alone for long periods of time. Did battery pull and now close all programs or hibernate when not in use, which seems to solve that issue. Its been roughly a week and now we're getting the following error when using only normal every day programs (Outlook, Quickbooks, Word, Internet Explorer, and Firefox): ""The instruction at 0x000007FEF5CD58C0 referenced memory at 0x000007FEF5CD58C0. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc0000185." The only option is to click on OK to terminate the program. Would like to know what is causing this issue, how it can be fixed, and if it might be related to the previously occurring Blue Screen event errors mentioned above. Thank you!
Hi, That could be cabling, hard drive, or motherboard issue affecting the hard drive. Likely to be related to the BlueScreens. Not a lot that can be done with the hardware on a laptop at the user level. Check with a real computer shop (one that does its own in-house service and not leeks and peeks at a Best Buy or other Big Box Stores) or Toshiba's Support. Thanks, Rob. I suspected as much. Toshiba support has instructed me to do a full wipe and reinstall of everything to rule out any software issues before they'll investigate hardware issues. I guess that will be my next step, but it sure isn't sounding good. It's still under warranty thank goodness.

How to reinstall Missing rundll32.exe file?
Original title: Missing rundll32.exe file I deleted my rundll32.exe file a few months ago and I can not find a way to restore it. My PC came from DELL with windows XP Home but I cannot find the OS disk. Is there anyway to recover?
Hi, Method 1: Follow the steps provided below to reinstall ‘rundll.exe’. a) Put the Windows XP CD ROM disk in the CD ROM drive. b) Click on ‘Start’ , and then click ‘Run’ . c) Type expand ‘X:\i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe’ in the Open box, where ‘X’ is the letter of your CD ROM Drive. d) Restart the computer. Method 2: Perform SFC scan and check if that helps. The SFC /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. F ollow the article given below to run SFC scan. ‘Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)’ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747
Dear:
I wasn't sure which file to download so I saved "3498 sfc files" to my download directory but didn't see it there. When I tried to download it again it told me that the file was already there so I assume it's hidden. However, it seems that since my rundll32.exe file is missing I have also lost my ability to "unhid" files and, as an aside, to remove software from my system using the Control Panel utility. So, I have three questions: 1. Did I download the right file, 2. Can you suggest how I might read the file, if it is the right file, 3. If it isn't the right file, which file should I download and how to I read it if it is hidden? Thank you, Rich
Nope. That is just a text file of the 3498 files that Windows File Protection and the System File Checker care about. Roll down the page a bit and look for the file: rundll32 Depending on your browser, you may not see the .exe extension on the files but download it anyway and save it to someplace you can remember... like your desktop. Then look at the file and if it does not have the .exe extension on it (rundll32.exe) rename it and add the .ext extension. Then copy/paste the file into these folders: c:\windows\system32 c:\windows\system32\dllcache (that is where XP keeps backup copies of important files). See how that works out for you.
Just a quick note to say "Thank you" for the files. They have really come in handy. Thanks!
I do not know how
ElderL, you are a legend. Thank you. PS, when I now open CP I get a message about authenticating rundll32.exe. as publisher is unknown. I have turned off further notifications. Thanks again.

Hi, Based on the issue description that you have provided, it is possible that one of your installed application or programs is experiencing an error. For us to determine the cause of this, we would like to know the following information: Have you made any changes to the computer recently? Installed any software or Updates? What is Rundll32.exe?
"C:\Windows\SysWOW64\rundll.32.exe" - Windows host process (Rundll.32exe)- shows up 5 times at open. What is this and does Win7 need it? Think it's connected to Chrome, but I'm a dummy. It's pernicious to Fire Fox, Pale Moon, Internet Explorer and Chrome (Chrome I just uninstalled). I've run Disk Clean Up w System, Security Essentials and Malicious Malware Remover. It disappeared for a while, but came back. My little Dell 745 sounds like a Titan Rocket launching, CPU at 100% all the time. Help!
Hello Sharon, The Rundll32.exe is used to launch functionality stored in shared Dynamic-link library files or DLL . This is a valid part of Windows, and normally shouldn’t be a threat. To ensure that there's no missing or corrupted files from your computer, we suggest running a System File Checker tool. For more information, click here . Let us know how it goes. Regards.
Dear Ernie San, I appreciate your information and advice on this Pestercating .dll32 problem that has developed on my little Dell. A few things I've found out is that I have a 64 bit system, but some of the movie sites I go to have 32 bit viewing / sound enhancements. Seems like dll's appear with NetFlix, PubFilm and Cucirca.uk. I'm pretty sure these dll's have to do with the Sound System. Just ordered a new set of speakers, which I needed any way. I've also found out my Excede (ViaSat) Satellite company has just limited my monthly "Band Width" use unless I want to pay an additional amount per MB or GB of use. (I've got a call into these people, because there service/speed has never been worth a darn and now they want more money for it. First installed in Winter and the installer aimed the Sat at a bare tree. Spring came, leaves grew and my service went very sketchy.) I'm certainly going to try the System File Checker, later this evening, and I Thank You for your help. I'll let you

May 18, 2011 Hi... I am using AVG 2011 Full Version and it caught 'something' and went ahead and quarantined it. However, now I have all kinds of problems, especially with being able to open programs from Desktop shortcuts, being able to do anything in CONTROL PANEL. Seems that the file extension ".EXE" is no longer associated with "Application" and as a result, anything with .exe after it doesn't know how to run...!! I am a pretty clever, savvy geek and managed to suss-out the heart of the problem... But the ral problem, cause, what-have-you, is that the RUNDLL32.exe file is missing/corrupt. I have tried several things to fix it, but to no avail. I need an XP SP3 rundll32.exe file and specific, step-by-step instructions on how to get it installed again. Good help appreciated! Thanks, Cal

a question about Rundll32.exe
Windows 8.1 i opened task manger after 1min after i turned on my PC & i so Rundll32.exe running, in win8 u don't see name Rundll32 in task manger, only when u click on a process & open file location u see Rundll32, if the process u clicked on is using Rundll32, my point is that it raised a suspicion in me is it something bad/badware or not, so i searched for Rundll32.exe & made a picture, i want to see is all on the picture are safe or are some threat, i have scanned, but found nothing, & i ask cause some say if its not in Windows Sys32 its something bad, but a lot of things are different in Win8 in case u cant see the picture that well, cause the picture is not that good, hard to tell whats written there c:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Chameleon\Windows\Rundll32.exe c:\Windows\System32\Rundll32.exe this one i know, well awry1 would :) c:\Windows\SysWOW64\Rundll32.exe c:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-rundll32_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_c8c3b19a7ee19
well i know that Rundll32.exe is a legitimate Windows file (its just as far as i know there should be just one in PC, Win8 is new to me), but what concerned me was there more then one in my PC, are all of them legitimate? or does windows creates a new Rundll32 file for a program that needs it when that program is installed?
Hello Sugram, Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community forum. I really appreciate your concern. Rundll32.exe is a legitimate Windows file which executes .dll (Dynamic Link Library) modules which are used to store common pieces of application logic that can be accessed from multiple applications. Since there’s no way to directly launch a DLL file, the rundll32.exe application is simply used to launch functionality stored in shared .dll files. You may also refer this article: Rundll32 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee649171.aspx I hope this information helps. Please do let us know if you need any further assistance. Thank you
Hello Sugram, Thank you for your response. Yes, Windows creates an associated "Rundll32" file with a program. However, sometimes, these files may be detected as an infection like a spyware. I would suggest you to run Microsoft safety scanner to check for any infections like viruses or malwares. Refer: Microsoft safety scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss. I hope it helps. Thank you
Got It but its first time i hear about Microsoft safety scanner, i have Avast antivirus, malwarebytes & spybot & this 3 have not found any infections yet, spybot only found junk, threat level green, so just junk so it works like this, awry Microsoft safety scanner download has 10 day's then u download new when u need it & it has also 10days? if so i guess it has no install, its just kind a program that u just copy i also have 26 csrss.exe running, no idea is it normal, is it normal for some systems & PC'S?, but my question is, dose Microsoft safety scanner find the source of that to if its not infection?
Hello Sugram, Thank you for the reply. If you need more information about "csrss.exe", please refer to suggestions from Kosh Vorlon - MS MVP replied on February 24, 2012. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/is-csrssexe-a-safe-process/26bba20c-2691-4d42-bec4-637436c53c4f Microsoft safety scanner only shows files which are infected. Hi Damonkashu, Let us run the sfc and virus scan and check if it repairs the file. If that does not work follow the next methods listed. Method 1. Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. 2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. More Information about SFC scan can be found in this document: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 Method 2. I would also recommend you to run online Virus Scan to remove any infections, if present. Follow the link below to run the free onl

The path rundll32.exe doesn't exist or not a directory. This is the error message box I'm getting at the end of booting up. I click ok and it goes away. I have run an avast anti virus boot scan and also used a registry cleaner and still can't get rid of this message. Does anyone have any ideas?

rundll32.exe installer corrupted
I know the rundll32.exe is in the dllcache file in Windows. I have copied it into c:\windows\system32. Problem: when I try to open a file with .exe extension I get a message: that says installer is corrupt. What now?
The whole message is "Window cannot open this file: File: rundll32.exe" I am running Windows XP, SP3 Yes, this happens with any .exe file I try to open. My antivirus software is StopZilla and it is current until April of 2012. and also MaxPC. I have Windows Firewall active.
rundll32.exe is not an "installer." If you are getting a message about a corrupt installer, there's something else going on. Please provide the complete text of the error message without paraphrasing. Does the problem happen when you try to run any exe? It would be helpful if you also described the version of Windows you have, including service pack (right-click My Computer and select Properties if you don't know). Also what is the full name of your current antivirus app, and when does its current subscription expire? What other security applications (firewall, antimalware scanners, etc.) are installed?
Yes, this happens with any .exe file I try to open. Go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm , read the explanatory information at the top of the page, then download both the EXE File Association Fix and the LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix and follow the instructions.
I'm glad that this fixed things for you. Malware is often the cause of the sort of file association damage you had, so you might consider downloading, installing, updating, and running a full scan with each of these free scanners. You can uninstall them afterwards (if you don't uninstall, I suggest going into the settings for SAS and turning off the option for it to start when Windows starts). pwwysydh.com redirect - rundll32.exe infection?
Hi all, First my computer was infected with cse.google.com, thankfully Spyhunter 4 managed to remove that, but a few days ago pwwysydh started to hijack all of my browsers. I looked into the registry, the host file, the location of the browsers and I found nothing. When I run Spyhunter, I get this: Name: Malware.Generic Path: C:\ProgramData\6904U91h18U9047\6904U91h18U9047.dll As the program itself can't seem to be able to remove it, I tried to manually delete it. Once I try I get the message: "This action can't be completed because the file is open in rundll32.exe" This led me to believe that most likely that dll is infected as well or it's the root of all my problems. I tried to restore my computer to an earlier point before encountered pwwysydh but the restoration fails every time I try. I do not have an even earlier point, or at least I can't see it (even though I'm sure I made at least one more manual restoration point from more than a month ago...) I also use Bitdefender Total Sec

rundll32.exe error
This is the message: Windows cannot find C:\system32\rundll32.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. I am getting this when I open up the control panel and try to use some of the tasks. This problem started to occurred right after a routine download and installation of Windows updates.
I followed you instructions to the tee. No change. The "rundll32" file u sent me is not an executable file. That is what I believe is missing. I installed ALL of the files in the folder you sent me also. No change. I also could not fing a folder named "c:\windows\system32\dllcache" Is it an invisible folder? I tried to create a folder with that name, but I was prompted that there was already a folder with that name. I just dont see it.???? Thanks for your help.
I just downloaded it myself from my SkyDrive and it gets saved on my system as rundll32.exe That's weird. When I go to that directory, the .exe files all have the same icon to the left. And you're right that in the list (under the Name column), not all files have the extensions included. Actually, all files EXCEPT .exe files DO have extensions. When I mouse-over the entry for rundll32, it does indeed say rundll32.exe . However, when I click on rundll32 and get the "File Download - Security Window", and have the opportunity to save the file type is NOT recognized as an .exe! It says: Unknown File Type, 32.5KB So unless OP renames it to rundll32.exe (which can easily be done on the fly), he's out of luck. You say that when you download it, the .exe extension is intact. But I just tried it, and it isn't. I would imagine the same thing happened to the OP. I'm not sure if it's a browser issue or a settings issue. FWIW, I am using IE7. At any rate, a number of us admire how meticulous your i
Betwixt all us guys (and gals), we'll get him squared away!
Oh... I see it now (with IE7). I mostly use Firefox or Chrome. Hey Robert Pyle, if you are using Internet Explorer, when you choose to download the file, in the File name box, it seems to just say: rundll32 You need to change that to: rundll32.exe Then save it and put the rundll32.exe in the appropriate folders. Or, you can locate the rundll32 you already downloaded and rename it to rundll32.exe and put it in the appropriate folders. Sorry about that! I will work on adjusting my instructions in my notes (it is just a copy/paste). I am surprised that nobody has mentioned this before as I have sent that rundll32.exe out many times. It seems that IE7 (at least) does not pay attention to the extension shown in SkyDrive (I tried a .dll file too - no extension). It makes IE even worse than I thought! Beck to zee drawing board, ya? This is good feedback though :) Maybe someday the MS Answers forums will catch up with the rest of the world and allow things like attachments and personal mes
What do you mean it is not an executable file? Yes - the dllcache folder is a hidden, system folder so you must configure your Windows Explorer to let you see those folders and their contents. To do that, do this: Open Explorer to the folder of interest. Click Tools Click the Folder Options, View tab Enable: Show hidden files and folders Disable: Hide extensions for known file types Click OK to save the settings. You can undo the Explorer adjustment when you are done (if it is your desire). I would not have downloaded all the files from my SkyDrive to your system - who knows what is out there, how long it has been out there, what versions of Windows they go with... I know there are some Service Pack 2 and some Service Pack 3 files out there. You may have just shot yourself in the foot! I just downloaded it myself from my SkyDrive and it gets saved on my system as rundll32.exe, so I would take a look at the file you downloaded and if it is not called: rundll32.exe Rename it until it
@Sandeep Ghatuary (Microsoft Support Engineer): Why do you suggest running sfc /scannow when it will not replace the missing file? That is not what sfc /scannow does and that is not how it works. To see for yourself, do this: Navigate to your c:\windows\system32 folder and rename or delete your rundll32.exe file. If Windows File Protection (WFP) is working, the missing file will be quickly and silently replaced from the backup copy in the dllcache folder. That is good. Now boot your system into Safe Mode or the Recovery Console so WFP is not running and rename or delete the rundll32.exe file again so now it is really "missing". Since WFP is not running, it will not be automatically replaced. Boot your system normally and try to use a Control Panel function like Add or Remove programs and you will see the error message. Run sfc /scnnow to completion and you will see that the rundll32.exe file is STILL missing which means sfc /scannow did not replace it. Why did sfc /scannow not replac

I followed you instructions to the tee. No change. The "rundll32" file u sent me is not an executable file. That is what I believe is missing. You did not follow Jose's instructions completely -- at the very least, you didn't put a copy of rundll32.exe in C:\Windows\system32\dllcache What error message leads you to believe that the rundll32.exe" file that you downloaded is not an executable file? Please provide the complete error message. Did you scan your system for malware with MBAM and SAS as Jose instructed? What antivirus application are you using and when was the last time you updated its signature file? I also could not fing a folder named "c:\windows\system32\dllcache" Is it an invisible folder? Yes, c:\windows\system32\dllcache is a hidden folder and to "see" it you can select "Show hidden files and folders" in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View, but even if you do not have that option selected , if you enter c:\windows\system32\dllcache in the address bar of W
I'm also amazed that Microsoft employees (or maybe they're just hired consultants) continue to assume every person posting here has a Windows XP installation CD (or easy access to one) and that sfc /scannow is a useful exercise. You do seem to know your stuff. Out of curiosity, when is it appropriate to run sfc /scannow? It exists for a reason; I would like to think there ARE times one could run it and benefit from it.
I uploaded a copy of the XP Pro SP3 file you need to my SkyDrive (everybody has a SkyDrive for sharing files). You can download it and when you do, put a copy of the file in these two folders (assuming Windows is installed on your C drive): c:\windows\system32 c:\windows\system32\dllcache (that is where XP keeps backup copies of important files). Here is the link to my SkyDrive and you can look for the file you need there: http://cid-6a7e789cab1d6f39.skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?resid=6A7E789CAB1D6F39!311 When you see the files available for download, you may not see the file extension (.exe, .dll, .cpl, .sys, etc.), but when you download them they will have the correct extension. You need to put the downloaded files in the correct folders on your system. That may not solve all your issues, but you will at least be past that part and then we can fix any remaining issues. It could be that whatever antivirus/antimalware program you are using quarantined (effectivley deleted) the rundl

Is there somewhere I can download an new "rundll32.exe" program and install it? If you are getting the Open with window then chances are there is nothing wrong with your rundll32. It's most likely your file associations are messed up. Click HERE . Download the zip folder. Extract the files and save them to your desktop. Right click on each file and choose merge. Confirm your choice at the prompt. This should solve the issue.

rundll32.exe runs most of the time
rundll32.exe runs whenever i run my old programs. why does this happen?
Knowing the DLL name should give you the answer, as rundll32.exe is simply a program which runs functions from a DLL. The actual commandline would be something like "rundll32.exe d:\program\mydll.dll,RunApp" (that was an example). To know that you can configure Task Manager to display full path of running processes From the View menu, click Select Columns… Scroll down the listing, select the following options and click OK. Hi, there You meant its a "phishing" site? well it has instructions to remove the file and hence the link provided.. @ Nwz Suggestion to re-read my post. Suggestion to read this thread.
a) Please do not download anything from the link which was posted by Nwz . It's one of the many SpyHunter pushing sites. SpyHunter is a commercial program which is not recommended here in Microsoft Community. The post by Nwz will soon either be deleted or at least the link will be removed. b) Since this is a detection by your AV TrendMicro it's best to ask either their support and/or their community. https://esupport.trendmicro.com/en-us/home/pages/technical-support/1115328.aspx https://en.community.trendmicro.com/tm_en c) You might want to upload the "suspicious" file to any of the second opinion services listed here: List of Online File analyzers & services d) You might want to do steps 1, 2 and 5 in this multi-step removal guide: https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-potentially-unwanted-program/ e) You might want to run a scan with: http://blog.emsisoft.com/2015/06/09/how-to-find-and-clean-malware-infections-with-emsisoft-emergency-kit/
Hi, there " I realize this is probably a virus but a full system scan on TrendMicro failed to detect anything. Anyone know what this could be and a remedy?" - It MAY have been a false positive are you facing any problems with it? such as high disk usage etc.,? And I don't think its a virus as it falls under the category of windows process. also check whether its name is rundll32.dll.exe no changes in the cases right? I don't think its a virus though but depends are you facing any issues with it? If yes then there is a good chance multiple files of the same name exist. rundll32.exe error strikes again...
I've got a LGX120 notebook, which I hadn't opened for centuries... Anyway, because of that, I had to delete some programs I didn't really need. One of them was rundll32.exe (I am not sure why I deleted it)... And now here comes the problem: I tried to see something on my notebook's calendar (to organize my schedule) and it keeps on showing an error, which says that the rundll32.exe is missing. At first, I said "Holy ****, did I accidentally uninstall it?". Well, actually yes; I uninstalled it... I've used my phone's calendar for my schedule, but it's annoying... Why do I have to unlock my phone or search the calendar on the internet, while I can double click it on my screen? Please note that my notebook cannot take CDs, therefore I can't run the Windows XP installation CD. Now I can't even open my "system" option in the Control Panel. The only thing I can tell you is that my OS is Windows® XP Home Edition. Please help me with this! Thanks in advance
If the only thing that's not working on your computer is your calendar, you did not "uninstall" rundll32.exe (or delete it). How do you think you "uninstalled" it? Have you searched for it? Click Start > Search Select "All files and folders" Type rundll32.exe in "All or part of file name" box Click "More advanced options" Put a check in the boxes to "Search system folders", "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search subfolders" and then click the "Search" button You should find two copies of rundll32.exe, one in C:\Windows\system32 and one in C:\Windows\system32\dllcache Assuming you found the two rundll32.exe files, what is the complete text of the error message you get when you attempt to open your calendar? If you really don't have any copy of rundll32.exe on your system, get it at the following link (kindly provided by frequent contributor to these forums Elder K) and copy place a copy in both C:\Windows\system32 and C:\Windows\system32\dllcache https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=EC
Thanks a lot mate, I really appreciate the fact that someone answered! (not a regular hotmail user, hehe...)

Wanting to minimize the amount of memory Windows uses is a counterproductive desire. Windows is designed to use all, or most, of your memory, all the time, and that's good not bad. Free memory is wasted memory. You paid for it all and shouldn't want to see any of it wasted. Windows works hard to find a use for all the memory you have all the time. For example if your apps don't need some of it, it will use that part for caching, then give it back when your apps later need it. In this way Windows keeps all your memory working for you all the time. 2. Read here about rundll

I tried to fix the associated files using this link " http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm " but the result remains the same. There are over thirty fixes on that page! Did you specifically follow Tech-Geek's advice and use the ninth one down from the top? This one: EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files) In addition to that, use a working PC to download to a USB flash drive both executables from this page: http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/ Once your .exe association is re-established, connect the flash drive to your ailing PC and you will hopefully be able to run the MBAM installer and then install the latest (or near-latest) definitions. And then run MBAM. Once the malware is removed, there is a good chance your ongoing rundll32.exe problem will be resolved.

Hi boatman4. Run a scan with your antivirus program however if the symptoms persist, I suggest that you get your operating system checked. Specialised utilities may need to be run to reveal the source of infection however the procedures are not appropriate to post here. There are many forums where you can do this however I have posted a selection below that are known to me and I can recommend (In alphabetical order). http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/ http://www.spywarehammer.com/ http://www.techsupportforum.com/ MVP (Windows Desktop Experience)
Is my rundll32.exe Corrupted
I believe my Windows XP Media Center Edition is suffering from a corruption/virus it looks like rundll32.exe is at fault because on boot-up the machine sometimes starts but very slowly and occasionally disrupts Norton Internet Security stopping antivirus and firewall. I have a similar XP machine and have copied the setup RUNDLL32.EX_ to "Windows32" then renamed the suspect file and before I can replace with the suspect file with new a new copy of the old rundll32.exe is automatically restored. My original ADVENT OEM setup disc cannot be found so how can I check then correct the problem.
Although you very well may have a malware problem, it's not all that likely that rundll32.exe is corrupted. As you have seen, Windows automatically replaces rundll32.exe automatically with a good copy anytime something attempts to delete or change that file. What service pack is installed? Right click My Computer and select Properties for information. How long have you had NIS, and have you kept it up to date automatically? If you see any error message, please provided the complete text, without paraphrasing. Even though you have NIS (which may itself be a part of your problems), please do the following: Download, install, update, and run scans with each of the following free programs (do not install the free trial of the "Pro" versions and be careful to UNcheck any option during the installation to install anything like the Ask Toolbar or similar add-on software). Don't run the scans simultaneously. Each scan will take quite some time, so start one up and go do a non-computer chore

That's right... Windows File Protection looks after 3498 XP files (yes - there is a list on my SkyDrive ) If you rename or delete one of those protected files, WFP will want to replace it with the backup copy that it keeps in the DLLCACHE folder (that is what that folder is for). That is why you can't simply delete it and replace it - you don't have time. WFP will replace it for you since that is what WFP does. WFP will quickly and silently replace the file and put a message like this in the Event Viewer System log: Event Type: Information Event Source: Windows File Protection Event Category: None Event ID: 64002 Description: File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:\windows\system32\ rundll32.exe . [Norton] advised that the slow boot process meant that Norton performs a check for virus updates and because the IP address was not allocated in time there was no internet connection and the process timed out. (thats how I understood it). That sounds plausible I have now set the IP address "as Fixed" rather than dynamic to try to get round that eventuality That's unlikely to help. There are a number of network activities that take place when your computer is booted up. If your network adapter is configured with the Windows default to have its IP address allocated automatically, one of the activities is a short series of messages between your computer and a DHCP server (generally in your home router). Unless your computer has been turned off for more than a day or so, the "lease" of the computer's IP address will probably have not expired, and the computer will request that the DHCP server "reallocate" the same address. This is a shorter process than the IP address "allocation" proce

Your error report from NIS seems quite common. I haven't really looked at many of the posts, but I've seen suggestions to uninstall NIS and then run Norton's Power Eraser and I've also seen a suggestion to uninstall NIS 2013 and go back to NIS 2012. Frankly, if I were you, I'd uninstall NIS using the Norton Removal Tool and then install some other amtivirus product, especially if your NIS subscription is anywhere close to the end. You can get any number of opinions on what a/v to use, but my suggestions are Microsoft Security Essentials (free) or eset NOD32 Antivirus (not free; and not the SmartSecurity suite).

rundll32.exe application error
I was using Windows 8 Consumer Preview for the past few months with little to no problems doing day to day tasks. I installed the Release Preview yesterday and now I have received the following error message, "rundll32.exe application error" on an all white screen. The mouse was responsive to movement, but I could not click on either of the two "OK" boxes on the screen. I had to restart the computer. When the OS came back up, the Action Center did not have any information about the above error. The only things installed on this machine are, Windows 8 Pro x64 w/Media Center upgrade, Epson AIO drivers (installed by MS) and Office 2010 x64.
Hi, 1) What do you mean by ‘on all white screen’? 2) When do you get the error message? Is the issue specific to Apps? c) On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK. d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
rundll32.exe, runsvr32.exe and svchost.exe
I'm having an issue on my PC. The processor is working normally, but there are 3 processes that keep showing up that take over 75% of the CPU each. They're rundll32.exe, runsvr32.exe and one of the svchost.exe. I've tried closing the processes even with admin cmd, but they just reapper immediately. The only way to not constantly have CPU issues is to suspend them, and even then they reappear after some time. I haven't recently made any changes to my computer or it's software, and this issue started about 4 days ago. I've ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on rootkit finder mode but it didn't find anything. I'm currently running it again on all finding modes. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Hubert, These are important Windows process that runs several Windows services. Usually this can be resolved by simply installing the latest Windows updates or running a full anti-malware/antivirus scan to remove possible malicious processes. You may also try to run the System File Checker tool using the command line sfc /scannow on Command Prompt to repair damages on system file integrity. Ideally, you can use the Process Explorer tool to check what services or processes takes how much of your hardware resources. This may be a bit different to your case, but you can check this thread to see how techspeeder resolved a similar issue. Let us know if you need further assistance.

Hi Barton, There might be a corrupted system file that caused the error message on your computer. For us to isolate the issue, we will need to ask you a few questions: What task are you trying to perform when you got the error message? Any recent changes made prior to the issue? Does the same issue occur on a different user profile? What is the build and version of your Windows? You can also perform a clean boot on your device. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program, an update or when you run a program on your computer. You can check this link for assistance. Feel free to contact us if you have further inquiries.

Hello Nafeezul, 1. Have you made any changes on your computer prior to the issue? 2. When exactly do you receive this error message? Perform the following troubleshooting methods: Method 1: I would suggest you to place the computer in a clean boot state and then check if it helps. You can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. To set the computer in clean boot, follow the steps from the link: How to perform a clean boot Note: After checking in clean boot, follow step: 3 from the article to reset the computer to normal boot. Method 2: Perform System File Check to fix the corrupted system files and then check how it works. Refer to the link " How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 " to perform System File Check. Note: It may ask for Windows DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make m

'rundll32.exe' issue
Starting about a week ago, I noticed that the circle next to my mouse pointer kept coming on every few seconds like something was running or trying to open. I went to Task Manager & under 'Processes' could see the rundll32.exe showing up in the list each time that it was running. How can I keep this from happening or at least keep me from knowing it is running? Thanks.

Is rundll32.exe a Malware?
What is this? C:\Windows\SysWOW64\rundll32.exe [Original Title: Malware?]
It is a legitimate Windows file but sometimes it may be compromised by or a similar file may be created by malware. Why do you think the file in your computer is malware? multiple rundll32.exe?
My Vista system has slowed considerably, on the net and off. I have scanned using MSSE and other systems and removed multiple trojans (sorry, I did not take note of their names), but something is still interrupting/slowing system response. One program identified c:\Windows\SysWOW64\rundll32.exe as a potential problem, and I realized I had two copies of rundll32, the other being in c:\Windows\System32. Windows Explorer displays a document icon for both files. Sizes shown are: c:\Windows\SysWOW64\rundll32.exe - 44,544 bytes c:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe - 46,592 bytes Should I remove the SysWOW64 copy? Is the System32 copy the correct one?

Seems strange that installing Java would improve system performance. You don't need java unless you have programs that call it or play online games that use it. My office VPN needs Java for a mainframe session via the web browser, for example. And the training courses offered online through a vendor are java based. Installing it when it isn't needed should have no effect on system performance. -steve
No, this would be normal on a 64 bit version of Windows. There is the 64 bit environment and the 32 bit. -steve

rundll32.exe error
Hey guys, I was using my windows 10 laptop today, when i tried to open file explorer it didnt open, then i tried to open internet explorer when my laptop froze and i got an error message a few seconds titled, "rundll32.exe" and the message said "Call was cancelled by the message filter", afterwards two command prompts opened and closed instantly, i was wondering what this error message means and if it is something malicious or just a simple error message
Hi Ajay. It's a fairly common error so no need to worry. I'd troubleshoot the error here: http://techgenix.com/troubleshoot-rpc-server-un... **NOTE: There are ad links intruding into the editorial copy of this tutorial so do not click on anything, just read the steps. I would not use the tools in the last paragraph. To reach Firewall or other Control Panel locations in tutorial type it into Start Search.
Hey thanks for such a quick reply, the thing is now I tried to close the tab which gave e that error and I got a new tab saying the rpc server is unavailable. With the same title rundll32.exe After searching it said it had something to do with remote access to printers and what not, does this error mean someone has access to my laptop remotely like a hacker. Remote access to my pc is turned off, this is quite scary and I feel quite anxious, I would be great full if you could tell me what this error message means Also after closing this message, file explorer opens, which didn't happen when clicked on the link before hand Thanks for your help and I look forward to your response

Windows\System32 Rundll32.exe
*For some reason, it may have been "modified" when i recently did a spyware/malware scan and removal on my laptop. The big problem is that it cannot find it, but the even bigger problem is that if i try to run any program, even the rundll32.exe program itself, the "Open With..." window pops up. Also, it isn't booting up specific stuff or features of specific stuff upon startup, such as Windows Sidebar or the scroll function of my touchpad. Do I need to reinstall Vista SP2 in order to get it or do I need to perform a System Restore? *(FYI if it helps, my HP DV9000 series laptop originally ran on Windows XP when purchased, but I upgraded it to Vista Home Premium back in 2007)
Start with this . If it doesn't help the download the associations for exe files from this page .

here are 2 solutions: A: go to C:\Windows\winsxs search for rundll32.exe if found copy it to C:\Windows\system32 as rundll32.exe if not found follow plan B B: open system restore restore your pc to the first point you find once the system is restored go to C:\Windows\system32 and copy rundll32.exe to another drive or device then undo the restore operation then after the restore is done copy the copied rundll32.exe to C:\Windows\system32 as rundll32.exe THANK YOU VERY MUCH :)
Hello ccnaguru, 1. When do you get this error related to Run32dll.exe? 2. Since when are you facing this issue? Regards, Savan – Microsoft Support.
I did the security check & it said I had 0 viruses. I still show on my Administer Event Viewer that I still have 45 some thousands on it. How can I get rid of these viruses, Trojans?

TIP: If you can not access or run the CMD as administrator, you need to reboot in SAFE MODE/with networking. then you can log on as administrator. you will probably find that everything WORKS in safe mode too. Hmmmmmm. I have the same problem. I have my 2 copies though in windows 32 and winsis, same size, same install date. So running sfc now to see what's up. also seem to have one in Malware Bites too. No viruses detected, but doesn't mean anything, I had the Win 7 2012 virus one time and no anti virus software detected it but you knew you had something the totally took my computer over, took a long series of fixes to rid that one. Ok, ran SFC , Win still cant access c;/ files in regular mode, only safe mode. I noticed that on top of regular RUNDLL.EXE files (2ea) I also have RUNDLL.EXE.MUI. dOES ANTONE ELSE HAVE RUNDLL32.EXE.MUI, EMPHASIS ON THE.MUI part? The CBS log repot from the SFC scan said acessing the CONSENT.exe file failed referencing the KB2442962 file. ANY Thing???
It is really helpfull to me....... thnx
rundll32.exe causes heavy problems
Hi everyone, It's simply impossible to work fluently without been stopped, because of this process. All rundll32 processes in Task Manager point to the same process in system32. Many antivirus softwares have been tried, but nothing found. System info: Lenovo yoga with i7 6560 processor, 16gb RAM and very big SSD drive Thank you very much for the support
Hi DaveM121, Thank you very much for the support. I've downloaded the tool and run Autoruns64. You surely better know what to delete or disable. rundll32 run all the time and it is not uncommon for rundll to use over 95% of the processor, even when nothing other is running. My solution until now was to kill that processes...
Hi jyprivat, Untick those top two items marked N/A Then restart your PC and see if that CPU usage has subsided
Hi DaveM121, I have untick both and it's pretty quiet at the moment after restart. Let's hope that it will no more cause problems... Any ideas about concrete next steps please? Thank you very much and have a great day!
Hi DaveM121, yeah that's right. Thank you for that and take care!
Hi DaveM121, I hope you are doing well. rundll32 came back and stronger :( This was on a second account set on the same pc, so for that I will run Autoruns again. In my account one process appears sometime, but it cannot be find with Autoruns. Do you have any idea pls? By the way in I've killed the 3 processes in the second picture... Thx
Hi DaveM121, great, done it. I've started Autoruns64 as admin and deleted both. don't think that it's about crypto currency, may be something with Lenovo Yoga 900. This is my second ultrabook and the first one also had the same issues. I got that issues every time after changing OS from Win10 Home to Edu. May be the a weakness somewhere...
Hi jyprivat, Okay, since that fixed the issue, go back into Autoruns, making sure to start that utility as Administrator Right click those two N/a processes and choose Delete to permanently get rid of them My feeling is that it was a crypto-currency mining infection . . .
Hi jyprivat, the main thing is they are gone from your system and that the pressure on your Processor id gone . . .
Hi jyprivat, Rundll32 is simply a host process for other processes to run on top of. it is a legitimate process and should not be removed However the processes running on Rundll are another thing altogether. It is not normal for rundll to be running on your system all the time, and from your screenshot rundll is using over 60% of your processor . .. Something on your Startup is loading a process onto Rundll, you need to find that and remove it form your Startup items Task Manager and indeed Msconfig offer only limited control over Startup items . . . Click the link below to download a small free utility that does not require installation When the file downloads, unzip it. Depending on your system, run Autoruns or Autoruns64 as Administrator With that utility, you can right click and delete any startup item in Windows Look carefully through the list for any reference to rundll, then right click that ans choose disable Boot your system again and see if the issue is resolved Before you de

Rundll32.exe "Suspicious botnet" warning
As a Windows10 user, my problem is a bit different from the most common rundll32.exe virus situation. Rundll32.exe is trying to contact to lots of malicious servers and my Antivirus program prevents it. I made a virus scan but my antivirus found nothing. As I understand it, my computer is being used to spam others, so my computer is one of the computers called "zombie". How can I fix this? Thanks
I use Opera and Eset Smart Security 9. There is not a popup window but Eset shows me a warning screen.(it is original, no problem) It shows the problematic program as Rundll32.exe and shows malicious servers IPs, too. for example, 94.124.122.8 80.237.133.110 108.178.52.44 There are lots of this kind of IPs and Eset's warning screen appears every 30 seconds. I can hide this window but this won't solve the problem. Rundll32.exe will continue to try to contact these servers, it will keep reducing the performance of my computer, too. I tried to stop Rundll32.exe from task manager and stopped it. Warning screens are not showing. But after restart, they will come back. If it is possible, can I delete rundll32.exe and paste the clean rundll32.exe to the same file directory? I f it is possible, where can I find the clean rundll32.exe? Regards...

Surprised that Eset cannot deal with the issue and since this is an Eset detection recommend you seek assistance from Eset. http://support.eset.com/?segment=home&locale=en_US https://forum.eset.com/ Suggest you submit a copy of the file to Virus Total for analysis. https://www.virustotal.com/ If Eset cannot eliminate the issue suggest temporarily disable Eset and scanning with the Emsisoft Emergency Kit, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool and/or Malwarebytes Free: Emsisoft Emergency Kit: http://blog.emsisoft.com/2015/06/09/how-to-find-and-clean-malware-infections-with-emsisoft-emergency-kit/ http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/kvrt2015#kb Malwarebytes Free https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ You might also try running an SFC Scan and see if it will repair/replace the "suspect" file: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833 If necessary you can always reset your computer. Delete All (Deeper Cleaning Including Add-on Data Deletion) = RunDll32.exe InetCpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess 4351 That would be equivalent to RIES so you probably would have to do that elevated, e.g. enter it in an elevated cmd window. Does that work then? BTW I have never found where people came up with these values. E.g. notice that 4351 = 0x10FF so if that works, it is pretty evident that the bit 0x1000 denotes RIES (or at least the removal of add-ons). However, why are people requesting those 8 other bits when only some of them are (supposedly) defined? To try to understand your symptom better you could run ProcMon and see in detail what that the set of bits you specify causes. E.g. if 255 really doesn't do anything any more even when the task requesting it is elevated perhaps you need to be more selective in the set of bits you specify by choosing a value in which all the bits that are set by it are defined? Good luck Robert Aldwinckle --- Thanks Robert !! Will

Windows 7 64 bit rundll32.exe issue
I recently installed windows 7 sp1, and this did not happen before that. I also have IE9 Beta installed, if that could be a problem. I try to run halo: combat evolved, and two things happen: it does not start and rundll32.exe is using 100% of my processor until I end it. If I try to open halo and then try again, it opens and runs much more slowly than before, I'm guessing due to the rundll32 problem. Any suggestions? Please help, I left rundll32 running for a while and I could hear the fan struggling to keep up on my laptop...
Hello Starcruiser322, The Run32 errors are mostly caused if the programs files are not loading. I suggest that you reinstall the Halo game and check if you have the same issue. You can remove it from the control panel and try to reinstall the game. You can also try to update the drivers for your display adapter and check if you have the same issue. You can check out the below article that will give you information on how to update drivers: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly Thanks, Irfan H, Microsoft Answers Support Engineer. Thank you thank you and thank you again. I wasn't sure if the program was at fault or trying to run a 32 bit application was. I have the latest graphics card, so no updates. I reinstalled the games (3) I was having problems with and it SEEMS to have worked.

"rundll32.exe" has been corrupted.
Sevral application programs will not run because of "rundll32.exe" has been corrupted. I have the original recoverery disk, but is of no use due to a new hard drive installation. Windows XP was installed by the repair shop. How can I repair this driver?
Having a new HD has no impact on using the recovery disk, perhaps theres more to your story
Use your recovery disk with your current HDD, It's no problem otherwise you replaced a MB with a different BIOS.
Thanks for the info. I'll try it again. Will let you know the outcome.

Rundll32.exe missing, unable to reinstall rundll32.exe or open .exe files
So I've looked around and figured out that a virus I had, XP Security, erased rundll32.exe when it itself was erased. Now, I've found another copy on my computer in a recovery ISO that came with it (Thanks, MSI) but it's useless, because I CAN'T OPEN .EXE FILES. I got internet explorer to open by selecting internet explorer in the Open With menu that appears every time I open a .exe file, and that worked for a few other programs (World of Warcraft, as well, mainly to test). So, what do I do to open Rundll32.exe when my computer won't let me select Rundll32.exe as a program to open Rundll32.exe with. I select it in the open with menu through browse, and it doesn't appear in the list of programs I can use, like Internet Explorer and WoW did. I wanted to talk to someone on the phone for 5 minutes to figure this out, but that costs 20% of what my computer cost ($50, im on a netbook). Come on, 50 bucks??? really, microsoft?
To all those experiencing "open with " issues. Click on the link below and run FixExe. This will solve the problem of exe association. If the run32.dll file is corrupt or misssing follow the instructions below to replace the file. exe.fix Missing or corrupt run32.dll Right click on Start > Search. Can't open Command Prompt, as "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe is not a valid win32 application." =( (when i open cmd prompt it asks me to open with. I clicked cmd prompt again and it gave me that message.) Thanks for the idea though, If I can get CMD open i bet that will work.
Try this, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. Type assoc .exe=exefile (note the space) and press Enter. You may have to restart the computer.
Heres my question: When i do "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. Type assoc .exe=exefile" it asks me what application i want to use to execute this. Isnt waht i need the "Rundll32.exe" is that what runs these programs? I am kind stuck since i do not have my disc and everytime i try and use a registrey program i have to tell it what program to use to run. Trueky it is agrivationg, can you help?

I am having a similar problem, after some katusha packed virus, for which my kaspersky said "restart to fix" and I did, and now have this problem on mostly with my main login id (the one that counts!). On my son's login id, foxfire and some other things work but not everything is on that id. On the main id no applications open, I am given an "open with" option like Cooler mentioned above, but these don't work right or really open anything either. On the main id, I lost all my lower taskbar links, including the one to my kaspersky, java, etc. From what I've read its a RUNDLL.EXE problem, I tried one reinstall fix that suggested looking in a difft folder and copying it from there and pasting it in Windows, but the folder they mentioned was not there. :( I have XP. What is this "command.com" that BurrWalnut mentions, if I try first suggestion and need to try this, what is it, where do I find it? ...help...

.... What is this "command.com" that BurrWalnut mentions, if I try first suggestion and need to try this, what is it, where do I find it? ...help... If you cannot follow my instructions above, it might be better if you asked someone, perhaps a friend, to help you run the two programs.
Yo Joelj1964, hi you doin'? I liked your 'to the point' instructions it grabbed my attention. Sir, I AM TECH handicapped. Also poor. I seem to create most of the computer injuries every few times I log on. Now I see on these pages I've stumbled on that my problem is common. I clicked the link as told in 1st par. exe.fix. What next? I'm not sure if anything has been corrected.
As you cannot run the Command Prompt from a shortcut, try navigating to \Windows\System32, right-click cmd.exe and choose Open. If that fails try using the program command.com. Now try the assoc .exe=exefile command again and restart the computer.
