perfmon.exe is a DLL file which is responsible for component Resource and Performance Monitor in Windows systems like Windows 7 Professional Edition 64-bit. It was created on 7/13/2009 4:20:01 PM, the size is 157184 bytes and its version is 6.1.7600.16385.
perfmon.exe can be infected by virus Backdoor:Win32/Delf.PW which spreads through social network Cloob to download and install malware Speed Up Memory 2012 on the affected machines.
Once infected, the file path of perfmon.exe will be re-set as:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\
And the software like PC game FIFA Soccer 12, Web browser BlackBerry8520 5.0.0.592 or antivirus Anti-Virus for Mac can't start up, along with error message:
perfmon.exe is missing or was not found.
When you restart your computer, you would receive perfmon.exe blue screen of death (BSOD), along with stop error code:
0X5266411

Found the following; c: cd "C:\Program Files\EMET" emet_conf.exe --add "C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe" pause The author said it was an overkill to which I agree but would it be safe to do this and or necessary? What needs to be excluded from this list?

Hi JamesMak, The stop code you keep receiving (c0000005) is kind of a catch all error. Most of the time it's faulty hardware, but sometimes a bad driver can also cause the issue. RAM would be a good place to start. If you have multiple sticks, remove all but one. Test it for a while, then shut down and try the other stick. The machine will run slower but it's almost a sure fire way to narrow down which stick is bad. I've seen problem sticks actually pass the diagnostics. I also notice you are getting stop errors on audio and video processes. Make sure your hardware is Windows Vista compatible. You can check here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/ If you haven't already, go to your computer manufacturers driver download web site and make sure you are using the latest and greatest drivers for Windows Vista 64. I would check all drivers on the system. Brent Microsoft Answers Support Engineer Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think. H

It happens randomly because it doesnt matter whether i am using the internet or word 07 sooner or later it will go to the blue with a code. I dont even have to be doing anytihng and it will crash Sometime it even happens when updating windows right after it installs the new updates. This has been happen the for about a year or so. This is my third time to reinstall vista 64 and i didnt install anything else but norton 2008 and vista and it still crash. My friends keep telling me it is my ram but i have checking them on diagostic test and they come out ok and passed.
Hi James, We would like to get a little more information to help troubleshoot your issue. Please answer the following questions as best you can. Are the crashes random or is there something specific that causes them to happen? How long has this been happening? Do you know of any software installs or system changes that were made around the time this started happening? Let us know the answer to these questions as well as any other information you may feel is useful. Thank you Shane Microsoft Answers Support Engineer Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Hi Dianne248, This thread was created in the Internet Explorer forum; the Microsoft Moderation team has moved this thread to the Windows 7 Security, Privacy and User Accounts Forum. Thanks!
Explorer.exe crashes: Windows cannot open the 32-bit extensible counter DLL ASP.NET_2.0.50727 in a 64-bit environment.
Windows 8 Explorer crashes on a regular basis - whenever trying to copy/work with any folder containing NEF (Nikon Digital 'negatives') - these can be hard drive or network drive or SDHC card based files - location doesn't seem to be a defining issue. Seems to be completely stable with folders of JPGs or other images. Problem started occurring 5th July 2013 - and I rolled back the PC to a previous system restore point created automatically earlier that day (about 0330BST) thinking maybe an issue with an update. Hasn't resolved the problem. On looking at error logs (below) I can identify when Explorer.exe crashes and all preceding fails - but am running out of patience trying to figure out what/why this is crashing. System has been stable since build - and only in last 24 hours has their been any problems - and only where NEF image files are present! PC is Windows 8 Pro, Intel i5 3530K
The file which appears to be causing Explorer to crash is the MSVCR80.dll: Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.2.9200.16433, time stamp: 0x50763312 Faulting module name: MSVCR80.dll , version: 8.0.50727.6910, time stamp: 0x4fee6687 However another, possibly third party, file may be at issue. For instance in the following thread it was the DivXMFSource.dl: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/windows-explorer-keeps-crashing-and-restarting-on/8709a2c3-1995-4e41-a958-206bb5a5700f it may be useful to try to capture a user-mode dump of the explorer.exe crash to try to get more info on the crash. You can configure Windows to create user-mode dumps. Create a System Restore Point first. If you copy and paste the following in Notepad and save as a .reg file, then right-click the .reg file and select "Merge" to add to the registry, a .dmp file at the time explorer.exe crashes should be created in the C:\CrashDumps folder: Windows Registry Editor
OK, thanks for the follow-up. If the problematic module was the P1.WIC.NativeComWrapper.dll renaming the P1.WIC.NativeComWrapper.dll may have worked as in the following thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/windows-explorer-has-stopped-working-and-then/ddf50775-451e-478e-b014-fd0cbe82bd72 You could consider contacting Phase One support on the issue.
Thanks Auggy for replying. I think I might have found the cause at about midnight last night - although only further testing will confirm... Had recently (last weekend) installed Capture One's equivalent of Adobe Camera Raw and uninstalling that seems to have (at least for the moment) stopped the crashing problem. Have had Explorer windows open in the background for at least a couple of hours now with no apparent issues. Apart from windows updates was the last thing to be installed... Don't you just love buggy software!
no disk for vista how replace corrupt files sfc.exe cannot repair
I ran sfc.exe system checker and it says there are corrupt files it can't repair. In sfcdetails.txt, I found these files that can't be repaired: mmcndmgr.dll perfctrs.dll perfmon.exe settings.ini filemgmt.dll wpd_ci.dll I don't have an OS disk for my Lenovo Thinkpad T400 running Windows Vista Business 32. Is there some place I can get clean copies of these? The symptom I'm having is I get a "class not registered" error when I try to use device manager and other management console tools. Thanks - Kathleen
Microsoft does not supply Vista DVDs to OEM Branded (Dell, Lenove, etc) branded Computers. And Recovery Disks(which you could obtain from Lenovo) are not designed for this type of work. They are normally used to do a Recovery to Factory Settings Install. Borrow a proper Microsoft Vista DVD(not Dell, HP, etc). A proper Vista DVD contains all Vista versions. The Product Key determines which Vista version gets installed. There are 2 Vista disks: one for 32bit Operating System, and one for 64bit Operating System. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Read the info at the link below re a Repair Install: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html You do the above Vista Repair Upgrade Install from within a running Vista Operating System. Cheers. Mick Murphy - Microsoft Partner
That's a lot of corrupted files. The first one is a primary reason you can't open an MMC (like Device Manager) of any sort - I think it's the control file for opening MMCs. If you do have or borrow the genuine Windows Vista Installation DVD then you should be able to copy over these files from the disk (though you may have to first extract them) - but a simple in-place upgrade as suggested by Mr. Murphy is the better and easier solution. I'm not sure whether or not you would be able to copy/extract the appropriate files from the Recovery Disk or the Recovery Partition (if you have one) - I've never tried to do that before (using them only for clean installs). I suppose it might be possible and may be worth an attempt if you really want to avoid a clean install and that's your only other option (and that very well may be the case - I can't test it because I do not have an OEM-supplied Recovery Disk or a Recovery Partition). To do so, you'd need to find each file (which in itself may

I too have similar issue with Windows 7 SP1.. What I see is leaving the auto update on makes the CPU goes high in that SVCHost, where as simply turning off the auto update solves the issue for me.. What I do is, I manually update the system.. :(
I have opened a ticket with MS, after 30 days still no solution. It has been escalated twice since then. I will update as soon as they figure out a solution.
Bump! Having the same issue with Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2. Didn't start having problem until we virtualized it. Nslookup defaults to itself, so no external DNS resolution. We can however ping outside. A reboot will fix this but the problem resurfaces quickly.
Hello , same problem here , I have a filecluster win2008 R2 latest patches . It has 24gb mem and all is used . Most mem goes to svchost.exe 1004 Dhcp, eventlog, lmhosts= svchost localservicenetworkrestricted and trustedinstaller. Antivirus , scom etc are stopt , same issue it takes all memory. On the other node all runs fine and it takes only 4 gb of ram . Is there any progress in your case ? Kr Stephan
We still have this issue.
So did you get a solution for this problem ? I have the exact same scenario. Host is server 2012.
Windows 7 64-bit, GA-970A-DS3P, SATA-3 slow HD and also USB 2.0 issues
Let me start this way: Hardware: Motherboard: GA-970A-DS3P 1) WD Caviar Black HD: 3 nos of 1TB each. One for OS, one for Apps and one for Swap. (Don't ask how i ended up with this config: that's a long upgrade story). 2) GTX 550 Ti graphics card. P.S. The system is otherwise snappy and fast with boot times less than 45 seconds even with peripherals connected. Opening apps are quick and system load (as long as i do not touch C drive) are faster. Thanks in Advance
Thanks Mike for the prompt response. Actually all 3 are separate physical disks. C, D and Q. I have only one partition (huge 1TB) on each physical drive. I just now did another perfmon analysis after booting up and I find the Avg Disk Read Queue length is at an average of 1.665 with a maximum of 5.124. The Avg Disk Write queue length is 0.012 and a max of 0.889 As regards malware, I double checked with boot disks of both MalwareBytes and Trend Micro. AV and anti-malware are Trend Micro.
Wah!! Ouch!! You must have got lucky.. The trouble with driver finders is that, while they appear to find the 'latest' drivers, they often don't match the hardware revision level and/or they are beta drivers, two reasons why the drivers are not always too obvious on the device manufacturer websites.. Your computer is very similar to mine, the AM3+ board that followed the 880G. Sound is stated as Azalia but the Realtek high def audio drivers work for 7, 8 and 8.1. Windows Update is similar to driver finders which is why it is generally accepted that it is NOT the best place for drivers. I recommend it being used only when given specific instruction from the device manufacturer, that is when they can't be bothered to support a device properly anymore.. :-)
Drivers.. Gigabyte are not too bad at updating drivers on their website, so uninstall DriverMax. Driver finders often install beta versions which may be more recent but can cause issues as per anything beta. Re USB transfer speed.. It does vary from very bad to not so bad, but speed is not so much reliant on the USB cable and drivers as it is on the condition of the locations at each end. Re Partitions. Not good at all. You partition setup is working against you. There is nothing good about separating programs from the operating system. Data, yes; Programs, No. Programs integrate with the OS to the point where, if the OS nosedives, you have to re-install the programs anyway. You are also making the drive heads do more work by having to move further across the drive as they get instruction to pick up from the OS, pick up from a program, pick up from the OS, pick up from a program. This is particularly true for your page file (swap file). The page file should only be moved out of C if yo
Not lucky -:) Just extra careful by selecting versions of drivers to install and doing a system restore before each driver, rebooting after applying it and waiting. The wait was hard. Some drivers misbehaved and had to be cleaned out with drive sweeper & ccleaner.
Thanks Mike. Need to start on cloning tomorrow and see if it improves performance. Will keep fingers crossed.
I misinterpreted the word 'nos'.. :-) Clone the boot drive onto the drive being used for the page file after having removed the partition on the page file drive as in reduce it to unallocated space. Your present boot drive may not be the fittest of its type. It can all be done using Aomei partition assistant, free for home use. http://www.aomeitech.com/aomei-partition-assistant.html If the computer seems to be ok, stop running performance monitoring software. It can drive a person crazy. Look for other stuff which may be slowing the system down..
Thanks Mike. Need to start on cloning tomorrow and see if it improves performance. Will keep fingers crossed. Waited to make sure the things were operating well. Did not clone the HD. Instead cleaned out drivers using DriveSweeper and updated it from Microsoft and DriverMax. No Azalia sound card drivers. They drop performance. Now i boot up to Start menu in about 41 to 54 seconds on average. Thanks.
Win7 64-bit slow performance after bootup
Right after booting Win7 64-bit, all softwares are slow and unresponsive. Using Notepad, I can type faster than the letters appears on the screen. If I start Ressource Monitor, the file perfmon.exe uses 27% of my processor time. I have found workarounds but I'm still looking for a "real" solution. Here are my 2 workarounds: 1. Boot Win7, wait 15 minutes, start Performance Monitor, close Performance Monitor, start Internet Explorer, wait for it to boot, start Windows Explorer, wait for it to boot, close both software, restart Performance Monitor; if perfmon.exe shows 27% CPU usage, close Performance Monitor and restart the sequence until Performance Monitor shows CPU usage of 1 to 3%. At that point, problem solved and all softwares run pretty fast. 2. Wait 3 hours before starting using the computer. That usually makes everything works fine. Now, if I don't do any of those 2 workaround everything runs slow and take forever to boot. Starting Internet Explorer (during workaround #1) g
Rob, I ran the Win7 Upgrade Advisor and checked the Compatibility Centre before upgrading. The only thing mentioned, and still mentioned when I run the Upgrade Advisor for Win7 64-bit, is the possible issue with the on-board network adapter. I did find the drivers for this on the Intel site and it works perfectly. As for the Corsair SSD, it might cause issue with the BIOS being old but nothing on the Corsair site points to potential issue. I have followed their recommended settings, use the Intel Rapid Storage Technology version that is supported (which is the last one for my mobo under Windows 7), and updated to the latest Firmware. Before I use the Vista 64-bit version of the Intel chipset .INF file, do you believe I'll be able to Restore Windows if it makes the situation worse? Thanks for you help.
Hi, Run the Upgrade Advisor and check with the Compatibility Center for your major devices. Also some System makers have on-line help and information for upgrading to Windows 7. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
To close this one, after a full week of using the computer, I'd say 95% solve. My computer is fast, with less software giving the "not responding" mention in Ressource Monitor. I also transfert 10Meg/s faster to my NAS. The major difference there seems to come from the System Interupt not taking so much of my CPU usage. I'll be good until my X79 system is ready next year. Thanks Rob, you were helpfull in digging for a solution. Francois
Hi, I am surprised the Upgrade Advisor passed the system for Windows 7 since Intel and the Compatibiliy Center both indicate it is not. Did you actually ask Corsair? I am not saying that it is an issue however you need to check it as closely as possible. Anything else is a guess when using an SSD on that Microsoft MVP
Thanks for the tips, here is the situation so far: 1. Followed the cleant startup procedure to see if startup services or startup items were causing the issue. Got rid of Acrobat X startup items has they seemed to slow down the machine but it didn't solve the issue. 2. Antivirus: only installed and ever used NOD32 version 4 64-bit since installing Win7. Since it has its own antispyware, I have disabled Windows Defender (as it was mentioned by Windows Performance troubleshooter). 3. Performed a cleaned install of Win7 (i.e. not an update) and formatted drive at install 4. Followed sfc /scannow procedure, no file changed as none damaged or corrupted as per the process message at the end. Of course, no file mentioned in the log after I run the process. Now running checkdisk on drive C: and D:. Will update when done.
Ok, ran checkdisk and all was fine on my C and D drives. Rob, I check Intel download center for my motherboard and chipset and updated my network adapter to the latest drivers, I already had the latest Intel rapid storage driver for my chipset, but since Intel retired my Mobo before Windows 7 was launched, no driver or INF files for my chipset were made available for it. The latest version of Windows supported was Vista. Should I update my Win7 64-bit system with the available Vista 64-bit chipset .inf file available on Intel download center? Beside these drivers, all others are up-to-date. Thanks for your input.
Hi, Use the Clean Boot and other methods to try to determine the cause of and/or eliminate the issues. --------------------------------------------------------------- References to Vista also apply to Windows 7. What antivirus/antispyware/security products do you have on machine? Include any you have EVER Microsoft MVP
Thanks for the info and sorry for the delay in coming back, the solutions provided took a bit more time to evaluate and implement. So, here is where I stand: 1. checked with Corsair on my SSD drive, not problem there and it should work perfectly as long as it's connected to the right port, which it is. 2. Tried Windows 7 install fix but nothing was found or there to fix - no luck there 3. Checked the Intel chipset drivers for my 955x chipset and found out that the Vista 32 and 64-bit package list other chipset in the target list, mostly the 945x and 975x. The 975X is not retired and has the Windows 7 64-bit chipset drivers available. Downloaded the file, looked at the released notes and found out that these divers are to be installed for 945X, 955X, and 975X chipset series. So, I installed the drivers without any issues. Here is the rundown of my system. A. Starts faster. After 10 minutes of running, I open the Ressource Monitor and perfmon.exe only uses 19% (vs. 27% before); close Res
Hi, Since you re-isntalled Windows 7 the issues are hardware, the BIOS, low level chipset drivers, and some other drivers which load at a low level (such as the video drivers). Intel Driver Update Utility
Hi, Well frankly I am amazed you are able to run it as well as you can now. I think the only long term solution would be a new hardware platform. Hope this helps and Happy Holidays! Rob Brown - Microsoft MVP
Performance monitor
I am looking for a way to use perfmon.exe to tell me how much a computer on the network is used throughout the day. I am not concerned with what they are doing on the computer, just if someone is sitting in front of it and using it. My thought is perfmon may not be appropriate. However it is free, and if there is someway to do it I would like to. Thanks for any suggestions
Windows Update not working after hard drive was replaced
Hi, I have the same problem, replaced HD in my Toshiba, rebuild from Sysimage, Windows Update not working. Ran "Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working" Problem still exist. The message I got while trying to update: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart you computer" Stopped and restarted the service, still no luck. I had run Windows Troubleshooting. It finds two problems with Windows Update components, it fixes them. The problem still exist. From other post: An other interesting fact: After the rebuild on the new drive, User Account Control does not recognize Windows programs. e.g.: running Perfmon.exe, the Publisher is Unknown !However, when I download Windows FixIt program, Publisher is recognized as Microsoft Windows. It seems that User Account Control does not recognize Windows programs that had been restored to the new HD, but recognizes the ones that are downloaded from the intern

Sorry Imran M, I should have been more clear in my post. My post above describes the steps I took which RESOLVED the problem. All running fine now. Thanks
Hello ScottEndorf, You are welcome. We are glad to know that your computer is working as expected. Please feel free to reply, in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.
I have what sounds like the same problem, but unfortunately the steps with disabling the two services does not help. I have run the Windows Update MS Fixit about five times, and each time it seems to fix the same issues and delares everything working. Unfortunately, the next time I run it I get the same issues found, so clearly whatever fixes were attempted did not take.. I also ran the System File Checker tool http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 twice, and each time, got the same two corrupt files fixed according to the log, but not according to the output from the command line which indicates that the files could not be fixed. Again it seems like the fixes did not take. 2012-04-25 12:34:30, Info CSI 0000033d [SR] Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:64{32}]"\??\C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions"\[l:24{12}]"inetres.admx" from store 2012-04-25 12:34:30, Info CSI 00000340 [SR] Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:76{38}]"\??\C:\Windows\PolicyD
Hi JeanRomeral, · Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue? Follow the suggestions listed below for a possible fix: Method 1: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/default.aspx Let us know if this helps.
Same problem. Cloned old HD to a larger hard drive. Everything worked perfectly except NO indexing and NO windows update - the two recurring issues that seem to pop up on the forums after a hard drive change. INDEXING resolved with change to "Intel Rapid Storage Technology". Google what I put in quotes, choose the download center and get the software specific to your OP and controller. UPDATES were a bit more frustrating. The microsoft .fixes and troubleshooters were no help. Go to Control Panel / System and Maintenance / Administrative Tools Select Services Stop Background Intelligent Transfer Service Stop Windows Update In "My Computer" go to Windows / Software Distribution Right Click "DataStore" folder. Rename to Datastore.old Rename "Download" folder to Download.old Go back to Services and re-start Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Windows Update. Check for updates. This will take a while since you've cleared the database. Hope this helps!
Hi ScottEndorf, You are the best!!!!! Thank you very much!. I had the same problem and tried your advice, now it works perfectly.

Running out of memory with ease while System taking ~3GB of RAM
Note: As this is a public discussion, I won't post any information that I don't want to be made public, even if the said information would be, in my opinion, useful for debugging. I may only send such information directly to Microsoft. I've been having my PC on for 1 day, 2 hours and ~40 minutes. My diagnosis tools tell me I'm currently using a total of 12GB of memory (virtual memory). From those 12GB, 3.428MB are being used by the System process. I've tried doing diagnosis using Ms's internal tools but I'm having a bad luck. "perfmon.exe /report" is concluding with: "The wait for the report generation tool to finish has timed out." Here's a (filtered) speccy report (deleted because microsoft won't use it). It is not a report from a microsoft product but it might be useful to whomever can check it out. I think this problem is caused by a fault in the memory management of the RAM virtual memory component of System. It is just not letting go. the RAM gets full and it still doesn't get th
Hi Brunoais, Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. As you might know that virtual memory can be increased or decreased according to the hard drive space available. Could you let us the exact amount of RAM installed in your system? Do you also face any performance related issue while using your computer? The report that you have provided is an unsupported portal, therefore I woukld suggest you to use the Memory Diagnostic Tool and check for any memory related issues. To do so c lick on Search box, type memory diagnostic tool and select the option and check the results. Does the result match with the earlier report that was generated when you used the third party application? The memory diagnostic tool says everything is OK. I don't know where it stores its full report, so I cannot compare with the data I have in that report. Anyway, what I'm reporting is not a hardware issue, it is a software issue. First, extra info: Before leaving for the night, I had increased my PC's virtual memory to 14GB (from 12GB). As you asked, the usable RAM size is 8077MB. My computer goes SUPER slow up to a near complete crawl. It was like that yesterday with the HDD at top bandwidth speed. Additionally, the program I was using (which requires ~1GB of working memory to work) was repeatedly being partly dumped to disk which had to be reloaded so that I could use it. All that while System was using ~3.2GB of my RAM. I was able to stable it a bit after it dumping many times the program I wanted to use. As additional information, my computer bluescreen crashed just minutes ago (~40min). I may only send the memdump directly to whomever is of high trust of microsoft or or mine. I had
Sorry for no updates for quite a while but here's what happened. On Saturday the 9th (January), I got a warning of a network driver update that had been released on that Friday the 8th. After updating, it seems like it stabilized the situation. Because of that, I can no longer reproduce it. So, with that, this becomes a WORKSFORME because the driver update solved it although, in the update notes, there's no information that it was solving anything like a memory leak or anything like that.
In order to diagnose some TDR 116 BSOD
Split from this thread. I had/have a similar problem. I have a number of items in the startup group; I want them to start on each reboot. I have two CMD windows that start and I have PCWizard, among other things. Everything in the startup group started on reboot except PCWizard. I have no idea why PCWizard did not start. In order to diagnose some TDR 116 BSODs, I was looking for some software that would monitor motherboard and video card voltages. I installed HMonitor 4.5.4.2, and the installation required a reboot. After the reboot, the two CMD windows started in administrator mode, and PCWizard began starting on reboot. When I decided that HMonitor would not accomplish the voltage-logging task I needed, I uninstalled it. After a reboot, the CMD windows still started as administrator and PCWizard still started. This morning I decided to do some research, and I saw this thread. I am not sure what UAC settings are mentioned previously in this thread. I went to the UAC screen,
Hello, Welcome to Microsoft Community. To check and change the startup settings for programs you may check the System Configuration Window. Hello Sampark, Thank you for posting on Microsoft Forum. As per your description I understand that you are facing issues while generating system health report on your Windows 7 computer. I would suggest you following steps and see if it helps. Step 1: Try Clean Boot A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. To know more, follow the article below: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Note: After troubleshooting, refer to this section ‘ How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting ’. Step 2: Check Event Logs for system health. Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel , clicking System and Security , clicking Administrative Tools , and then double-clicking Event Viewer . if you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type

This is a new machine with Windows 7. I have noticed that the red light on the front of the box which denotes disk activity never stops blinking. Even when I am not using the machine. I went into Task Manager and into Resource monitor and I see activity from several different sources. This is after I stopped all tasks. They are:System ($logfile, Software.log1, mfplat.dll.mui, SOFTWARE and $mft (NFTS Master File Table), perfmon.exe, a couple of Norton apps, etc. Can anyone tell me where to start to look to stop this disk activity? I guess with the disk activity my system will never go to sleep when I am away from it.
Thanks. After I posted that note, I started looking around and found out that the Power rules did not have the block checked to put the PC to sleep. I checked the block and it went to sleep like it was supposed to. I thought that I had verified that the block was checked when I got the new PC. Once again, sorry for the unnecessary question. Z

There are quite a few reasons (that I can think of ATM) for the disc activity: - Windows is still building its search index (initial build is only done while the system is idle); - background disc defragmentation running (also done when idle); - Norton running a background scan (most likely set to run when idle.) Here, "idle" means "no user input, and no media playback (e.g. listening to music, watching a video) running." It does not mean "no disc activity." If you have the system set to go to Sleep after xx minutes, it should do so xx minutes after you stopped doing anything. Quick way to check: set your Sleep timer to something short - say, 10 minutes. Leave the PC alone for at least that time. Does it sleep yes/no? Computer is constantly running at 100% CPU
Hello, Recently, I have been having a problem on my Windows 8.1 Dell Inspiron laptop where my CPU is constantly running at 100% even though the programs that are running are not shown as using that much power. I recently preformed a clean boot (which didn't seem to change anything) and then booted normally. My bios time dropped from 3.8 seconds to 2.5 seconds. Other than that and a drop in memory use, nothing seems to have changed. I am not experiencing any drop in my computer's processing speed. My computer does not run slowly and the only indication of the CPU running at 100% is the task manager. CPU is running at 100%, speed is 2.40 GHz Memory is at 28% (this dropped from about 50%) Disk is at 100% Wi-Fi is a 0 Kbps with a few random looking spikes Within four minutes of boot, memory has increased to 33% and disk has dropped to about 5% utilization on average. CPU is still at 100% with speed of 2.40 GHz. (It says that the maximum speed is 2.16 GHz..?) When I open the Resource Monito

Fisnik, Well if you want to take technical to technical... perfmon.exe isn't a snap-in either. The snapins are the registered DLLs and logs, and in order to get the graphical display, an ActiveX control. Either way, I wasn't trying to make it that technical for Astasia. Thanks for your technical response, but it's a forum and not a business. You do not need to step on other technical individuals because you assume that you are the only one with the answer. High CPU usage in Windows 7 between 80 to 100%
*Original Title: Help! High cpu usage and corrupt files I have a Windows 7 computer. I have had very high cpu usage the past few days. When i run nothing it is between 80-100%. I have tried running spybot and malware bytes on normal and clean boot and nothing fixed it. I ran SFC /SCANNOW on Clean Boot and it says some corrupt files cannot be fixed. I have also tried a windows security clean program and that did nothing either. I think the high cpu things are system idle, perfmon.exe, rndll32.exe, mcafeeshield.exe, svhost.exe, one of those. i tried to track which one in resource monitor but I couldnt find the culprit. The computer definitely does not have high cpu in clean boot btw. I tried stopping some services too such as windows update is stopped and still nothing. Please help!!

CPU running at 90-100% - possibly due to perfmon.exe
Lately my computers CPU has been running at 90-100%, even when I shut things down. It seems to be somewhat triggered by the flash player, even though it doesn't seem to be what's taking up the ridiculous amounts of CPU. What does show up, however, is perfmon.exe. The advice I've seen so far has been to either do a system restore - I tried it once before and the problem went away, but has now come back and my computer says it doesn't have any restore points. The other piece of advice I found was to disable it from starting up when the computer does, but it doesn't show up in msconfig. Advice? I'm very frustrated and tempted to just delete it, because it is driving me mad to not have a working computer. I'm running windows 7.

Superfetch precaches "Command & Conquer" and "Supreme Commander" BEFORE logon
Vista 64, 4 GB, 6 GB swap, Quad core, more than one hard drive. Vista is installed for 4 month, works well enough so I won't go back to XP. Two month ago I saw superfetch precaching unneeded file for bootup, making the bootup process slower, so I changed in the registry "EnableSuperfetch" to 2, (= boot files only), which helped by that time. At the 30 of December I saw (using perfmon.exe and boottrace) it prefetching "Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour" and "Supreme Commander" files BEFORE logon, and rattling on the harddrive DURING logon on those files instead of taking care of Virus Scanner, Realtek-Audiomanager etc. My Autostart part is very clean, there are not even icons on my desktop for those two games. I did not use som strange "Vista Optimizer" tools, everything I changed was under my own control. What I saw in perfmon (after logon): svchost.exe (LocalSystemNetworkRestricted) accessing "G:\Supreme Commander" + "G:\Command & Conquer The First Decade\Command & Conquer(tm) Ge

Windows 8.1 DPI Scaling
I have an Asus G55VW with a 15.6" 1080 panel, and nvidia 650M discrete graphics. Windows 8 was flawless, beautiful at default settings - I never touched the DPI scaling control in the display settings. After my update to 8.1, that all went out the Window. Apparently, Microsoft tweaked the DPI scaling code for 8.1, and broke a lot of applications in the process. Browsing through these forums, it appears this is yet another issue that surfaced during the huge beta test known as "Preview", but was not addressed in the RTM. I first noticed the issue in Google Chrome. My tabs wouldn't go more than 2/3 away across the title bar when the window was maximized, and the rendered web pages looked horrible - like Chrome was stuck in 1366x768 resolution on top of 1920x1080 native resolution. I found the answer in the Google Support forums, which was to disable DPI scaling on the executable's properties, compatibility tab. Since the product forums restrict image size, here is a link to this screensh
Nope. Nothing yet.
Not sure what happened here, but maybe the values got confused between hex and decimal? 0x60 = 96 in decimal; when I look at my machine, it is already set to 0x60 but I still have issues with the *applications*. The only way to fix it is to disable the DPI scaling in the compatibility settings; I seem to have the same issue that DanMossor is describing - the desktop is fine for me.
Hello, You may like to checkout following article: http://www.blogsolute.com/configure-dpi-settings-windows-8-1/28226/ Hope this helps, Good luck :)
No, that is adressing DPI scaling per display . The bugs I'm describing are per application . The overall DPI scaling as set in the display settings panel (at 100%) has not changed, and 80% of the software on the machine works fine. I've managed to fix one, I think I fixed one, and the last one I reported above - the performance monitor - can not be fixed by individual application DPI scaling.
Have you tried the registry changes from the below? I haven't yet but have the same issues and it is painful! http://www.thewindowsclub.com/blurry-fonts-poor-display-scaling-office-2013
Setting the window size to 16 gives me a olerable size: But 18 is no good:
Is there a proper fix for this yet? Paul
**Update** So I have just gone in and tried this change and eventually it worked perfectly. So I ran regedit.exe went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop found LogPixels right click modify I then changed the value data from 60 to 96 reboot all was very wrong! Everything was bigger! went back into LogPixels changed back to 60 Reboot Windows is PERFECT again, all applications run in the correct DPI as before ;-) Hopefully this helps
same problem here I thought it all looked flawless before the update but now it looks terrible and it effects my experience on the internet. please fix this pronto!
I have problems with specific applications as well. My 15.6" screen on my notebook runs 2880x1620. DPI scaling is absolutely nessesary! I have it set to 200% (LogPixels 0xc0). All looks nice except 2 apps i use all the time: Remote desktop and Powershell. Remote Desktop looks normal, but the machine i connect to uses the entire screenresolution - that looks a bit strange when connecting to a machine with a 1600x1200 resolution. Powershell acts a bit more strange. It starts out in 200% zoom, but befor I can type in a single letter, it shrinks to 50% zoom - yes, very tiny. A fix for this is absolutely nessesary.
perfmon.exe stuck at 25% cpu use and freezes desktop on and off when certain webpages are opened....
Sometimes when i go to certain websites when using firefox (25.0.1) and even chrome while having performance monitor running, it will hang the computer. I have to patiently wait till i am able to navigate to the open front webpage tab or perf monitor and shut it down, then all is back to normal. Even with noscript and blocking a

Right now I'm on a fresh format and install of windows. I wonder if it has to do something with adobe flash which causes firefox and chrome to affect perfmon for some reason. I really don't understand why that should be. 3. I don't get an error message.
Hi Richard, 1. Does the issue occur when you use Internet Explorer? 2. Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue? 3. What is the exact and complete error message you get? I would suggest you to try the steps from the following link: Windows hangs or freezes http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681286 Note: 1) The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again. 2) If you run the virus scan the program that is infected with virus will get deleted. So you have to reinstall the program. Also if the files and folders are affected with virus then they might even get deleted. Hope this information helps. Reply to the post with updated status of the issue to assist you further.
Hi Richard, If you are not getting the error message in Internet Explorer, then there might be some issues with chrome or Firefox. The issue also could be with adobe flash player. I would suggest you to contact the respective forums to check if it is a known issue for them.
Perfmon /Report in Windows 8.1 produces weird results
Hello! I have just updated my Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro two days ago and I like it a lot. In fact, I love it! Because it seems much faster than Windows 8 Pro. The concern now I have is that when I launched a perfmon test, two weird things occurred: 1) It says I do not have administrative rights: Error message: An error occured while attempting to generate the report. The operator or administrator has refused the request. I still can find the reports generated using the console (I launched Perfmon.exe and browsed to the reports) Now that's the second part 2) Everything (CPU, RAM, Graphics...) seem to have a low rating and Windows alarms me that I should consider freeing up applications and stuff knowing that I do not feel there is a problem. In fact, My Windows PC is faster than ever before, less resource consumption is notable. I realized that Microsoft removed the Windows Experience Index, which it seems to me, was what used to make the ratings (or at least display them). I thi
I do have the same thing! Exactly. It did not matter the modifications regarding the administrator account. Also, the status of my account is Administrator as well. Thank you for you help

I am just adding a screenshot of the bug here:
After recent rollout of updates 11/12/2013. The manual method to finding the report is lost. Anyone hear any word on this yet? I have not been able to use this since I upgraded from Windows 7.
Hi Steve, 1. How many user account do you have on your computer? 2. What is the exact error message you are getting? If your user account lost the admin rights, I suggest you to enable the built-in admin account and then check. Method 1: from the dropdown menu. Hope this information is helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.
Yes I think so too. As far as I am concern this issue does not really affect my daily usage, I would still appreciate if this error is corrected (knowing Microsoft, I feel like the coming updates might resolve the issue). Thank you for your help Caleb.
I'm sorry I'm unable to help any more than that. I can only say 8.1 is still brand new it's possible that it's a bug that will be resolved in a few months with scheduled Windows updates. It also looks like there isn't a huge userbase concerned about perfmon bugs, I use the Windows performance monitor on a regular basis though.

PerfMon problems - Unable to Add Counters
Hello everyone. I registered just to ask this question, which I could not find after quite a long while consulting Google. I come to you all in hopes that where Google failed, you will not! I use a program that some of you may be familiar with, called Samurize ( http://www.samurize.com/modules/news/ ), which does a lot of things; what I use it for the most is the ability to, at a glance, discern my CPU usage, RAM usage, network information, uptime, harddrive space, and my calendar schedule, among other things. I know it's an old program and I know that it was designed for Windows 2000/XP, but it has worked without a hitch (excluding this one) on both Vista and Windows 7. Recently, though, the ability to monitor CPU, RAM, upload and download speeds, and uptime has gone; all of them give me a flatline, reporting that I'm not using the internet at all, or my computer for that matter (except Uptime, which reports that I've been on my computer for 49 days, 17 hours, 2 minutes, and 47 sec
@ Progas : Thanks a ton ! :)
Thank you. This resolved my issue as well.
I'm taking that as a no? I'm 100% sure that this problem is not that uncommon; surely SOMEONE has an answer.
I followed the steps that you outlined above and it didn't solve the problem. Using Run, perfmon still returned the same messages about not being able to add counters. Any other ideas?
Hi, If you are having problems opening performance monitor, then I suggest you to enable built in administrator account and check if it helps. Follow the below mentioned steps: 1. Open the Local Users and Groups manager. 2. In the left pane, click on the Users folder. 3. In the middle pane, right click on Administrator and click on Properties. 4. To Enable the Built-in Administrator Account - a) Uncheck the Account is disabled box. b) Go to step 6. 5. To Disable the Built-in Administrator Account - a) Check the Account is disabled box. 6. Click on OK. 7. Close the Local Users and Groups window. 8. Log off, and you will now see the built-in Administrator account log on icon added (enabled) or removed (disabled) from the log on screen. NOTE: Click on the Administrator icon to log on to the built-in Administrator account. Now from the above provided steps you need to check whether you are able to resolve the issue, if you are able to fix the issue with default administrator account then y
